What octane fuel is everyone running in their 98-01 R1's?

The guy I bought my bike from always ran 89 octane. I've ran 93 in all my previous bikes (900rr, RC51, 929) and never thought of running 89.

I've been racing cars for years and I know lower octane levels can cause serious detonation when compression levels are too high.

Is 89 OK to run in the Carb'd R1's? I've been putting 93 in it since I got it, but if 89 isn't going to hurt the motor or performance i'll throw 89 back in it. 93 octane is 3.30/gal here.

TIA

93 normally, 94 when a Sunoco is around.

Yes the manual says 87 octane, but I have done test (in car) to prove higher octane burns and runs better.

I drove from harrisburg, PA to Youngstown, OH on 87 octane. Upon my arrival, I had about 1/8 of a tank.

I drove from Youngstown, OH to Harrisburg, PA on 93 octane. Upon my arrival I had a little over 1/2 of a tank.

Higher octane creates a cleaner more powerful burn, needing less gas then lower octane gases.

Just the normal 95 Octane we get here.....Although I some times use a tank of 97 Octane once in a while if I am in a different country like France and riding through the mountains. I just don't trust the fuel in France so I run the odd tank of super unleaded about one tank in four.

At least it is better than the mix I used to use in my Yamaha RD350LC...A 50/50 mix of 98 and 118 Octane low lead avgas !!

Per volume, 87 has more energy than 93... and it burns a bit faster, though flame speed is essentially the same for both.

If you don't need 93, don't use it - a waste of $$. All higher octane buys you is increased knock resistance, but if your bike is tuned for 87, you don't need the extra knock resistance.

As for your test, do you have specific details like average speed, elevation changes, ambient conditions, tire pressure, etc.? If not, it's hardly scientific, and you proove nothing to me...

118 Octane!:scared Is that racing fuel?

Airplane fuel..........lots of people bag on avgas, but it's got lower H2O content than regular gas due to being subjected to high altitude, freezing tendencies. I like it 'cuz it smells cool!!

I have all the information you ask but I did not want to bore everyone here, so I sent the details to Car-&-Driver!:lol :lol

I agree. :iamwithst Unless you have done something to increase the compression in the engine stay with the 87 octane. Those years were made to run on lower octane. Why waist your money on the higher grades.

No as JC said it is aircraft fuel...BUT the tuner who did my LC found that mixing 98 Unleaded and 118 Low Lead avgas did not make 108 but 121 because the unleaded used octane boosters to get the 98 and the 118 was just high octane leaded. Clever or what!!

Now with fuel prices it would have cost me about $25 US per gallon to run my little LC !! and it did about 25 miles per on the road and 15 miles per gallon when I raced it.
