Go with what Yamaha says. If you go higher then you are required, you are burning a harder to ignight fuel, and therefore actually losing power.
yepp...thats true....

yamaha said our R1 need 95 octane (RON)........RON is used at several country like Europe, Asia..etc.....

but someone told me that US use MON.....MON is lower number than RON...
i mean, 95 (RON) is same with 91 (MON).....
but several time i notice....if i use 92 RON....it accelerate faster....but thats my opinion...

Lots of bad info on this thread...

Use whatever your bike runs best with - period!

Ron is a higher rating than MON but in the US we us r/m...

a 95 ron is 92 r/m or 89 mon...

My bike is 13.1 c/r and loves 93 and when it was 11.1 c/r it really liked 87 but hated 93...

You could start with a search...but you'll find the same answers.

Been running 89 for ages now and no issues. Octane does one thing...resists pinging...the higher the number. You run the lowest octane that engine will take without pinging. Mine pings on 87...89 is actually cheaper for me anyhow, and I get the best gas mileage. Sooo...that's where it stands. If the bike is goign to be on the track and under significant load...up it to 91.

I use 93, and 94 here. It is stupid to use anything under 90. If you do, you will find out very quick what I am talking about.
Define quick?

5...6 years of riding...150k miles?
:dunno

Ah man, nice one Porn. :lol :lol :lol Actually, that would be a good segment for them to air a story about. I would stick with at least 91 octane; although, I have ran 89 with no problems on occasion.

No wonder........ While filling up the tank on my 03 today, I figured I could be a tightwad so I filled er' up with 87. $10.00 worth. I now notice the engine with an erratic acceleration on first gear. Almost like it's bogging. I can't notice it on any of the other gears since the bike is moving too fast. But on first gear between 0-15 mph I really do feel a difference. For the record this is the first time I have ever put 87 in my bike since I bought it new and WILL BE THE LAST.
