04. I never really like them a ton before that. I always dreamed of having a Gixxer to be honest. When I thought about what I wanted it was always a Gixxer or sometimes a CBR. I liked the CBR 600 that came in the orange tribal design for that one year. My uncle bought a 04 R1. Pre ordered it and got it when they were first coming out.
I rode his some and started really liking it. After riding it I told him I wanted to buy it if he sold it. When the Ducati Hyper Motard was announced he decided he wanted that so I bought the R1 from him. Had like 4k miles on it some of which I had put on it when I got it. Only has 6,400 now so you can see I haven't ridden it much in the couple of years I've had it.
I wouldn't have bought a used bike from anyone but I knew him and know he is about like me when it comes to having the services done. Had always been service on or before when it should be. Was garage kept and his second bike. Had never been down. I just knew the total history of it and knew he hadn't beat on it at all. That's the only way I'd buy a used sport bike.
It had frame sliders, stainless steel brake lines, a tank protector, and Michelin Pilot Powers when I bought it. Other than that it was stock and I have only added HID's.
After riding it when he had it and then buying it I love it. Not that I don't like the Gixxers or anything but I think I like my R1 more. I've never cared to upgrade until this new 09 and not sure that I will upgrade but I do like some of the features of the 09. The exhaust would have to go though as I think it ruins the looks of the whole bike.

myself , i went to a dealer in 2002 and w/ all the (maybe 100+) bikes there, when i first landed eyes on the R1 , i was " wauwww" .. i said to myself "someday i will learn just to have that bike/ at the time would be the one in the picture"

2002. i ended up getting a really good deal on an erion 929 which was sweet but as soon as i sold i wanted the R1
The 2004. I love the headlights. I seen one with angel eyes and went crazy. I immediatly sold my R6 and got a R1 not for the extra 400cc but for looks!
Since I became interested in bikes the 07/08 R1 had always caught my eye as I thought it was great looking. While different, I liked the looks of the 09...and everything about the engine, of course 
So I guess the 09 is the one that made me pick one up.

I've always liked the R1 but what really made me want to run out and get one was the 04 model. Hell I fell in love with way the bike was redesigned. From the undertail exhaust to headlights even the seat. By the way I saw the 09 in person today and was very disappointed!!! I hope Yamaha does something to redesign it. Wheres the 04 team!!!!!!:fork
