the 98-99 upper fairing has a blunter, shorter nose which obviously means that the 00-01 has the sharper nose. i've been personally told that they won't fit each other since you have to buy the proper lights and maybe the mounting bracket. if you're looking at the red color combo, 98-99 had a particular color scheme that is very different from the more popular 00-01 scheme

 

well the 99 i need looks almost exactly like the 00-01. I figured out the difference. it's barely noticeable, but the black paint that runs up the middle of the fairing on the 00 is wider than the 99 at the nose. the red paint line between the black paint and the headlight is slimmer on the 00-01's. anybody follow what i'm saying?

 

correct - I have a 99 and the 00-01 - I was told if you want to switch to the 00-01 upper you need the fairing, fairing stay and headlight assemply (and a new windscreen) the 99 has a smaller windscreen than the 00-01s

Just ran across this post, here is the deal, i'm putting together a 99 R1 that my brother wrecked and i had no clue about the difference in nose/lights between 98-99 to 00-01, BUT....

The nose i got is off 99 and headlights from 01 friends bike that crashed.. i have not bought a bracket that holds nose, lights in place.. should i buy this bracket for 99? will it all fit together??

please let me know, all advice will be highly appreciated.

The lights on the 00-01 are closer to the edges...meaning the gap is bigegr between the lights and the edges on the 98-99

 

since the healights i got are brand new and i got them for free, then just go trade my 99 nose for a 00-01 nose at a local motorcycle salvage yard? Nose is in great shape just has scrapes but those parts are always repainted before they're put on anyways..

 

the ligts on the 00 model are wider. As martinc said, they also are closer together. In addition they go longer to the outside edge.

 

i have 01 lights right now and 99 nose so those two will not work together.

If i get rid off my 99 nose and find a 00-01, then i will have no problem fiting my 00-01 headlamps right?

 

u will need a 00-01 upper fairing stay to fit the 00 nose and headlights, then your 99 gauges wont fit quite right and will need to either cut the hole in the fairing stay bigger, or use spacers so the wire connecting to the gauges will be able to plug in.
