Well, in the time that I've been around here I havent had anyone pop that question. I would have researched that question before asking it in here. Take it easy on him guys.. Plus..dude, dont tell me you have a '03 R1 without knowing even that question... whats that..your first bike? My advise..sell it for an R6 or watch your hard earned 9+g's go out the window by lack of experience.

WTF!? What's the problem with his question? He wants to know if the carburated 2001 R1 has more power or is faster than the FI 2003 R1. Sounds like a reasonable question someone might ask. It doesn't necessarily mean new rider, R1 first bike, blah blah....

the biggest difference is the pre 02's are carb'd, after that they move into technology- fuel injection
no more jetting for performance adjustment- you purchase an aftermarket module called a Power Commander. From there you hook up to it load or alter any maps to fine tune your ride
have fun

No, thats why they dropped carburation for fuel injection.
what shite...it was dropped to meet the legislative requirements. The M1 was using flatslides till recently and they only binned the carbs (which they were using as they were so much easier to set up and gave better results (acording to the riders)) because they needed FI to integrate the active slipper clutch and other fancy gizmos

the nicest thing about FI is when you change elevation is calibrates automatically. no choke is require either. otherwise the carbs on the 01 R1 are pretty much perfect...

back in early '02 my buddy purchased a new R1... side by side to my stock '01, the carbed bike would pull 2-3 lengths every time, regardless of the driver. maybe it was 'broke in' differently but the FI bike was always a tad slower

No i am not a new rider , it was just a question, my buddys bike seems to pull out a little faster that has a carburator . Also i am not a mechanic to have known the answer . So i asked people that might have known the diffrence , its a legitimate question as far as i am concerned !!
But its no problem its all good !!

In this case my 02 is for sale:lol

But then again i like the throtle response on the FI models.
I guessyou cant slow down technology everything now is FI even my Microwave:lol

first of all, they are different animals for the simple fact of carbs vs f/i. second, the '01 airbox faces backwards and gets air which is not as cool or clean as the '02/'03 which has a forward facing airbox, which allows cooler, cleaner air into the airbox. i own a champions edition r1 and an '02 r1. the '02 feels like it has ram air as it pulls hard the faster you go. i'm not saying my champions edition r1 is slow, it just doesn't have that slight edge cooler air allows. this is just touching the surface, as the plugs are different, the two model years handle differently.

set your pri. screws open 3 1/2 turns and raise your idle to 1300 rpm's and you will never use the choke again.

i think the biggest difference is that with fuel injection, once you put a PC on it, it is a lot easier to fine tune than a carbed bike every time you put a new mod on that affects the engine.

Its interesting sometimes how someone asks a simple legit question and it goes off in tangents. Anyway I have heard that the 98 was the fastest of the lot and then the later models were tamed down a little to make them a bit more controllable. The 98 pops wheelies at the most unexpected times and can catch you out. A lot of mates that I ride with say my bike leaves them behind off the mark. These are just my thoughts. I have no real proof to back it up.

the '98 gearing was different from the '00/'01 model. the '00/'01 model year had a slightly taller 1st gear, among 150 other engine changes. if anyone noticed, yamaha does use the carbs on their gp bikes. they put f/i on them, but then decided it's much easier to tune with carbs.
