I just recently picked up an 02 r1. My question is this: at what rpm is it ideal to shift out of 1st gear, that is, to prevent any grinding or clunking or any other undesirable side effects. I do most of my riding on the street, so I really do not push the bike that hard. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, second gear on my previous bike gave me a lot of trouble, so that's why i'm a little paranoid.

I'll throw in another tidbit, but I am not the authority here, try to ride the R1 in a higher RPM like somewhere between 4-5K RPMS, because you might need to accelerate to get out of trouble and the faster you go in some instances the easier your bike is to control and maneuver. I always ride about 3K rpms.

I'm not sure how it is on the R1 but there is an issue with the R6's that if you continually shift out of 1'st above 6000 it will start grinding more and more and develope a gap between 1 and 2. I wish I would have known that before I put 5000 miles on mine.
Just shift before 6grand and you should be good.

'99, changed gearbox to a used one a year ago when I bought it (bought with screwed gear), put 15,000 miles on it, and it still runs great.

Shifting around 6-7k when riding calmly, and anything above when the pace quickens. No impact by now. Learn to match the revs well.

you know I think every bike has trouble with the 1st to 2nd gear transition. My last bike was a 99 cbr 600 and I swear second gear was shot to hell. Now I think I'm starting to have second gear trouble with my 02 as well. I notice that when I shift from first to second under hard acceleration that second tends to grind like a motha. I'm starting to get worried because I bought the bike used, and god only knows how much punishment the previous owner put the bike through. Is there a way to fix this problem?
