When should a chain be replaced? I maintain mine per Yamaha specs but it is starting to get discolered (not normal discoloration) what should i do?

My chain has a little rust on the outside edge of some of the links (like that when i bought it). Do i need to replace it, or just keep it well lubed and clean?
