Really all depends what you want to use the PC for. I like Dell PC's. If I HAD to get a brand name other than Alienware, then Dell would probably be it.

You could always build it yourself though. You can build something way cooler than a Dell, and be far more upgradable.

Dell used to be good stuff...it's still ok, but their build quality and internal hardware is not up to the par it used to be. Alienware is super stuff, but super pricey too. HP...sorry bros, but it just sucks. I have a Toshiba. I got the portable with a 17" screen. The thing just rocks and is reasonably priced. Plus it has the Nvida graphics card. However...if you want the absolute best in performance and reliability...though I don't like em...the mac is the way to go. They are tiny, and super powerful.

Dell is still pretty good, but their quality has declined in the past few years, which is kinda sad to see. I think Compaq/HP has really improved their quality in the last several years. I have a Compaq at home, and that is what we use at work as well, and they seem to be rock solid.

I would do what others suggested, and that is to build your own PC with nothing but top-notch parts, and that would blow away almost anything you could buy from any of the name brands out there. :thumbup I'm planning on doing this sometime later this year. :jump

It will cost you more $$ and time to make your own. Besides in a few years you will need a new system anyway. Computers are so disposable. GO DELL.

I would go with a Sony, I've had nothing but good experiences with them. They also come with tons of software for video and such.

Man I can't say enough about how awesome Alienware is. Top notch computer in almost every respectable publishers eyes. I have the new style Area-51m and it's nothing short of damn inpressive. I have stopped using both of my other desk tops for the most part. Alienware is the best in both mobile and desktop PCs. However like everyone else in here said, you will pay for the best.
If you don't want to pay for the best then I'd probably say Dell.

Not true, I build my computer about 11 months ago, P4 2.66ghz, 1gb ddr 333, lite on 52X burner, lite on dvd, WD 120gb 8mb cache hd, WD 80gb 8mb cache and blah blah blah it cost me complete with shipping of the parts around $975 with new 17" monitor, new speakers and new wireless mouse/keyboard...i checked on dell and for a comparable system, not including the tv/radio card, case mods, and some other small things it would have ran me $2800!!!

when you buy these deals from dell and such you don't get what you think your getting, your getting a common computer, when you build your own you can focus on parts for it that are actually going to be beneficial and easier to upgrade in the future!! get better brands and get better performing parts.

don't even bother calling dell for customer service you'll need a translator just to understand the person that answers.

Build your own if you need tips or help just pm me...order parts from newegg.com(most parts free shipping), once you recieve the parts it takes about 5-8 hours to assemble and setup depending on the parts and software/upgrades from microsoft.

I've got a Dell XPS desktop, i love it, but i would not have bought it except i got $1000.00 of the list price when i did (i love stackable coupons!!!) I also have a Sony Vaio laptop (older model FXG) I love both and have had NO problems with either.
As far as Dell quality falling of.... HUH?
ATI 9800 Graphics card,
Soundblaster Audigy Sound Card,
Maxtor 7200rpm 160 GB hard drive
Lieon DVD drive.
Doesn't seem to be cheap stuff to me......

They also still use motherboards that accept more than 2 memory chips. This means you can add 512mb chips (which are cheap) instead of 1GB chips if you want memory for video editing.

Oh, and don't even get me started on Mac's. Yeah they last a long time, that's why the one at work for video editing is on it's third mobo, and 4th dvd drive. Yep super reiliable....... NOT!

Dell All the way

The best bang for the buck is going to be a DELL. If you build one you need to know what you are doing?? and then you have to shop for the right parts. If you go with Alienware then you will be paying way too much for what you get. shop around at dell and wait for the free shipping and some extra memory promotions and you can get a great deal.

If you want a Laptop, go with Apple, I got one last summer for birthday from several friends, and... its just amazing, it works like wonder, its 12" and I would never sell this thing, its tiny yet powerful enough to do video editing and burn DVDs, they are pricy, but if you want quality Apple is the way to go. For a desktop go with a built-yourself one, I have had nothing but good luck and experience in building my own machine, saved me thousands in not buying an alienware, and yet I got the same quality. There is a book out from techtv.com then teaches you how to built your own machine, or you can just read some articles on the internet, its really easy to do, not heart surgery.

Good luck
