It depends on what you want. The Gixxer feels bigger, bulkier, is faster (but doesn't feel as fast as it really is). The Gixxer's stock brakes suck. The R1 feels more solid, more nimble, razor sharp, and looks WAY better.

If you want a stunt bike, go with the gixxer. But if stunting isn't your primary focus, then go with the R1. I've ridden tons of gixxers and they don't feel as refined to me. I've had 4 hondas and the R1 feels pretty close (except the R1 has more power) in the fit and finish department. Plus you've got to admit that the R1 is probably the best looking japanese bike out there.

Had a '02 R1 which was stolen. Bought a 03 GSX-R 1000 to replace it... Selling the GSX-R1000 to get a '04 R1....
The reason why I'm going back? The fit & finish... Yamaha's attention to detail far exceeds that of the GSXR...

Yes, the GSXR has more power... And it even felt more flickable to me... But in the end, I can't stand how cheap the GSX-R felt...

Don't get me wrong, the GSX-R is a powerful track tool. I just like the R1's looks and build quality better...

All this is totally subjective to some, so I am qualifying that up front.

But I want to say after having owned 2 models of R1s and a number of GSXRs (and a bunch of Honda and Kwaks), I find the opposite is true.

The current GSXR is dead stable and works better the harder you push it. It only feels off when you are tea trollying around with it. newbies will like the R1 better most of the time.

The R1 is the other side of that coin. Its feels great to 95% and is nimble and all those other things, but gets all out of shape when pushed to its limit. You really have to work with one to get it where you need if you use that last 5%.

Hopefully they get that better on the new one, and not just by factory mounting a damper. Yamaha beleives in a very high center of gravity, and that is harder to make work.

Basically the GSXR is the track tool and the R1 is the great streetbike and stunter.

But that's my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I got one of both. The GSXR is faste in the high speed stuff 100+ the R1 is more nimble. They are both a hoot to ride. I dont worry about the 2000 R1 braking down but I do with the GSXR. The handeling on the new R1s are suppsed to be more stable though so all bets are out for next year. I would think the 04 R1 will be a pretty safe bet thouhg. The GSXR is better for passengers the rear spring is just about right for two people and it is not easy to fix without a new rear shock.
