Which R1 is faster, 98-05 model?

OK guys dont get me wrong here, I know since 1998 there has been alot of upgrades to the R1 such as styling, suspension, engine mods, swingarm and many more, but my question is this.

Since the later model has got 'Ram Air' I know it relys on this to peak at 170hp (at the flywheel). The earlier models were 150hp and were supposed to be 'king of the sportsbikes' with thier rapid 1000cc motor packed into a 600cc chassis.

The other day my '99 model hit 183mph on a deserted motorway (for 3 miles) and got there quite quickly too. I beleive that these bikes are geared to around 185mph (don't quote me) and basically I want to know what difference the later models are to my earlier '99 model. I'm talking about stock models not modded sprockets with teeth missing etc.

What would the difference be on acceleration? or is it a case of the rider skills? is it that noticable? is the mid range alot greater on the later models?

I'd like to hear everyones input on this as many people have biased opinions about THEIR R1 !

I thought the peak with ram air was 180 :dunno

there was a article about 98-99 vs 04/05

getting it as fast as a 04/05
spent a few grand... mostly on suspension and a exhaust... jetting... blah blah blah...
anyways... the accel is much better on a 98-99 down low...
and hte mid sucks in later... if u read the forum..

basically what it comes to... a short track.. hte 98-99 is better.. longer track(with long straights) the 04-06 is better

the older one seems to be a little nose lite, a little smaller in size and a lot stronger in the mid-range. The new one is more center balanced, screams at the top with a burst of power and is more stable. I raced one with a full exhaust and tune and k&n filter. He was in the front on turns with me not to far behind and i passed him on the straights.

:dunno :dunno
The new R1 definitely handles better than the old one:fact

Apparently they smoothed out the acceleration when they introduced the fuel injection model in 03... it has more mid range power alledgely :dunno
The 02 / 03 is a really sorted bike and faster than the 01 but the 04 / 05 is faster :fact

I'd still took an 03 over the newer model as it does have more midrange and feels more racer like to me

Hey redrocket996 I know the new ones handle better in the turns. But my bike is stock and his wasn't and since his is a little better in the mid range stock anyway that is why he was ahead of me in the turns. I was only about a bike length back on the turns

more midrange this, more midrange that. If you lay the dyno's over top of one another, they 04-05 still has the same or more midrange then the old R1's. its just they "feel" like they have less, because they have so much more up top AND they also rev another 2000 RPM higher, so of course the power curve has to shift up the RPM scale.

Also, what difference does midrange make, when you keep the engine on the boil anyway? Racing does not/should not really take into consideration midrange, since the RPM is kept where it should be via SHIFTING.

i also dont understand they hype of changing gearing. In reality, you are only affecting 1st gear....and adding torque to it (since you can't go any lower). 2nd gear becomes the old 1st, and 3rd becomes the old 2nd etc.......so why not just be in a gear lower in the first place, without losing hp (smaller radius = hp loss) by adding the smaller sprocket? Change in gearing = increase in RPM's for given speed, so does riding in a lower gear.

Well that would explain a lot. No doubt he'd sorted out the front forks. I've got a friend who raced a 99 R1 in British superstocks and he reckoned that it was possible but took a lot to get a 99 R1 handle well. The 99 R1 understeers in the fast turns and oversteers in the slow turns. The problem was sorted on the 03. Though a good rider who knows his bike could of course with a few suspension changes maybe ride around it pretty good. I've seeen some very fast guys on old R1's but they would have been even faster on a newer one. :dunno

It's interesting that this is even a discussion. Kinda makes you realize how great the 98 R1 was when it came out.

I ride an 00' on the track and pass guys on the new R1s all the time. It really comes down to who's driving. Unless of course you're pointed down a strait road but then I think a Busa is faster anyway.

i just got an 06 had an 03 for more then 2 years, the 06 is better in everyway, including acceleration from lower rpm's, the brakes are way better, the bike is way more stable and accurate in corners and the front end feels unbelievable with almost no deflection from mid corner bumps , it is noticably smoother, the top end yank on the new bike is also considerably stronger then the 03,

ive never ridden a 98 but every pre 02 i raced with my 03 i beat, so i think its a no brainer shouldnt require a lenghty discusion, im not puting down the 98 but they pretty much sucked at the track from what ive been told by a gmd computrack guy the extra travel in the front forks made them next to impossible to set up properly

My 2001 and 2004 R1's were miles apart:fact
