Which sprocket setup is best for 04?

Yea im lazy & dont feel like using the search feature, plus this helps up my post count:p

Have an 04 R1 & looking to improve the bottom end a bit. Dotn really care about any ridiculous 180 mph top speed as I really dont have any place to open it up like that anyways.

Which sprocket setup is the easiest & best for around town, stoplight to stoplight? 16 tooth front?

And will the speedo read accurately? If not, what can be done to correct it?

Thanks for helping me with my habitual laziness.

It really depends what you are using the bike for. Certainly 16T front is a great start. Made a big difference for me. That is the way the bike should have come from the factory. This is where I would start.

Some guys are going +2 on the rear as well.

the guys at my shop just dropped their demo model down 1 tooth on the front. They feel the bike was geared high to beat the noise regs ie lower revs at given speed = less noise. I find my bike a little hard to get off the mark without screaming the clutch. The guys say it helps with the surging problem and makes it much better out of corners but turns the bike into a bit of a wheelie beast. I am going to put a few more miles on mine first to make sure it is fully run in then I may go down that path. Some say it puts more strain on the chain though.

You can go -1 front, and like +2 rear, then you;re getting into the power at like 35-40mph in 1st, better than 60.

Your speedo will be off by about 10-13%, you can buy a speed healer or a yellowbox to correct it. I recommend the speed healer as it has more adjustability and better logic. http://www.calsportbike.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?pid=800

Did you have to plug the PCRIII into one of those plugs under the tank on the right side( might not be the same plug used)
The Speedo Healer works off of different wires than a Power Commander. They affect completely different systems and in no way interfere with one another. The Speedo Healer interupts the signals from the speed sensor to the speedometer display. The Power Commander interupts the signals from the ECU to the throttle bodies.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, I'm seriously thinking about putting a 15t on mine after tasting the 16/47, it seems like the more I sprocket this thing, the bigger I smile everytime I ride:)

Prolly not though, will be another HUGE increase in torque which it really doesn't need. And the gears will be getting pretty short at that point......

Don't do it. I have a 15t sprocklet on my 02 and it suck$. I attempted to race this weekend and got my a$$ handed to me because (1). there is too much torque on the bottom end to keep the front wheel down in 1st and 2nd, and (2). After you get control of the bike and keep the front end down, you top out before you can chase down the other bike. I ran against a Kaw 636 and with the sprocket change both bikes top out the same, I couldn't catch him and he couldn't pull from me. Doing a roll-on is a different story, I took him. But still once out in front, I couldn't pull too far from him, we were just stagnate at the saame speed. I tried many times after that to launch from a dead stop, and the front end likes to go straight up no matter how low the RPM is. I'm throwing this 15T away next weekend. It's just too much gearing if you like to smoke the comp. It's great for wheelies though.

Yeah you're right King of Clubs, don;t forget though you're starting with a 16, we're starting with a 17, so it would be like you going to a 14!!!!!!!!!

Anyways I went up 2 in rear and -1 in front and I can tell it's not anywhere near as fast up top, mabey peaks out at 160-165, and you're using so much rpm at high speeds that it really throws you for a loop (not literally), but it's hard to hold on when the rpm's are at 11-12 (about 140), there's sooo much torque. Now I gotta see what I top out at......

OK, so far I've seen set ups that are great for low end torque, and the stock set up is great for the top end, is there a set up anywhere in the middle? Here in the midwest, we don't have the twisties like the coasts do :bash , most of our roads are looong and straight so I don't want to lose too much top end, but I would like to add more on the low end. I guess I'm in search of the best of both worlds, if that's possible.

Ditto . I put the 16T (stock '03 part) on last week and big difference . Can't wait for the next trackday to test it out . After I made a few suspension changes at the last trackdays it had actually become rather hard to make it loft the front wheel but this put it right back to what I remember when I first rode it . The lowend torque makes a world of difference riding two up I can already tell . I can simply let the clutch out and she'll pull away at idle with no problem .

Depends on how far back you are on adjustment now. In most cases no.

On anudder note, how many miles on your stock chain? It is best to change them as a set.......

I have 8500 miles on the bike.The chain is in good shape and i have quite a bit of adjustment left.Also,ive been told a stock 06 r1 wont pull max rpm in 6th gear with the stock gearing.If this is true dropping one tooth in front should get me to redline in 6th with minimal loss in top end speed???

Change it all at once, trust me on that one. Let the new parts break in together, or you will have a vibrating mess.

After looking at a few things, I decided to order a 16/47 (or -1/+2) setup. My FZ was -1 +3 and it was perfect for that bike. The 60mph 1st gear is pointless for me on the street. Having no fairings keeps my speed bellow 120 98% of the time. So I want the power as early and as often as possible.

A friend of mine said he like -1/+1 best, but he also does track days. Worst case I can swap the rear for a 46 if it's too insane.

Hmmm...I was thinking of going to a gear modification myself. I'm a street guy that would like more low end. I don't want a wheelie monster so I'm hesitant to change the gears. I've read many times in the forum about the -1/+2 setup and the -1/-1 setup. Which setup would be best? Also do I need to change my stock chain for either setup? I had a brand new chain installed maybe two months ago and the bike has sat in the garage ever since due to cold riding weather.

It's always a good idea to swap the chain with front and rears together. But with only a few hundred miles, I think you'd be ok. Might want to go -1/+1 to start. -1 in the front is about the same as +3 in the back. A lot of guys only drop 1 in the front and they are happy.

I was spoiled with my old bike. My R1 is fast, don't get me wrong there, but you have to run it in to 10k range. My FZ was from idle to "oh shit" in about 3 seconds.

Bingo.

Also, I only change countershaft sprockets if I see wear on them. Usually I can make it through 2-3 chains and driven (rear) sprockets before needing to change one. Considering I ride like a nutjob and always get at least 15-20k out of my chains, it seems to be working ok for me.

I changed my chain out at 23,000 miles along with a driven rear sprocket. The -1 counteshaft sprocket I installed at 4000 miles literally looked like new, with no visible wear whatsoever.

I should have my 520 16/47 setup next week. Of course my bike won't be done until next year, but at least I'll have my setup ready to go.

I figure if +2 in the back is too steep, I can swap it for a 46 and I'm sure it will be perfect for what I want out of it.
