this is probably an old topic, but..... I've been seriously considering a $600 helmet, just wanted to know who else has any real nice expensive helmets and how you deal with scratches and stuff... I'm looking at my old helmet and even though its scratched up from drops, the worst is all the deep gauges in it from wrecking, but I still go about wearing it like nothings wrong with it, kinda like sitting in a car thinking its really nice but when you get out and look at it you realize its a rust bucket....,
so I'm wondering if your mad to scratch a nice helmet or not be bothered because the extra money is paying for the protection not the paint job... I'm lookin at an AGV gp-tech.... you know the one......

I don't let little dings get to me. I have a Shoei X-Eleven (actually two, but one is out of commission due to it being on during an accident...was the Daijiro replica) and it's pretty hard to scratch as it is. I care more about the feel of the helmet on my head, and the X-Eleven is very light and comfortable. I haven't had the pleasure of trying on an AGV because no damn shops around here sell them. I've heard good things about them, though.

I was able to get an OGK FF4-R Carbon build helmet. One of 200. Only available in Japan. Simonfromkobe the king of japanese exotics got it for me. Light doesnt describe it...

have an arai sinister. its the second one i have purchased. the first one i got into a accident with. and once they have been in an accident they are useless IMO. anyway. prior to arai i had HJC and will say i wont own anything but ARAI again. cant say enough good things about it. i dont think cost is a factor when it comes to comfort and protection. the comfort keeps you focused on the road and the bike. the protection speaks for itself. as far as scuffs. i never had any prior to my crash, but i am pretty anal when it comes to my bikes and accessories. if i were to have a scuff then i am sure a good level wax such as meguers(spelled wrong?) or mothers would work

um...if you crashed on it...time to get a new helmet

iv got a suomy extreme dragon

i said i had two. one that i crashed with and one that i replaced in the crash. the one that was scuffed was the one that was crashed so i replaced it and disgarded the scuffs. read the post before you try to be an editor :finger::moto:

Dings, scratches and bugs show the journey the helmet has been through and separates the posers from the ones who actually ride their bikes. :thumbup

Nothing wrong with keeping it clean and scratch/ding free either. :thumbup :)

Actually, I shouldn't be talking, I've got 3/4 inch chicken strips. /cry
Note to self: Sign up for some track days...

I can't believe I just read that. If you crash in a helmet, it's done bro, get rid of it. I've never dropped a helmet either, just handle it like an egg. If you are going to pay for the best, make sure you buy it for the fit, not the graphics.

For sure want the best affordable helmet out there, and although I havent tried them yet I think its between AGV, Arai, Shark, and Suomy... but seeing as how the best AGV just so happens to have the graphic I want, and is an Italian brand, I'm leaning heavily towards them....
My old HJC is just done with, needs to hang in the garage next to all my broken pistons and engine parts....

I've heard the Ti-Tech is a lot tighter on people than the GP-Tech. *shrug*

As for replica choice for the OP...gah. I'm sure Suomy makes good helmets, but besides the solid colors, I have yet to see a replica of theirs that doesn't remind me of a clown that threw up all over the helmet and then was murdered on top of it.

My all time favorite was my euro OGK David Jeffries replica, but its no longer made. If I were to buy another helmet it would be another OGK. That being said I have a Shark RSR2 that is my next most favorite helmet. I've also had Arai, Shoei & HJC. My least favorite helmet was the HJC, it started falling apart the first season.

used to always ride in shoei and even crash tested them with great results but since buying my suomy spec 1r extreme i'll never go back. still have a basically new rf1000 that i need to sell.
just make sure you try different helmets and get one that first and foremost fits your head and not just the ones with the "coolest" graphics.

I have an Arai RX-7 Corsair and the AGV Rossi 5 continents helmet. I've never dropped them, but I do have some marks from rocks and shit on my Arai. Most helmets are DOT and Snell approved so protection is a given. No matter how much you spend on a helmet, it's going to get scratched up at some point.

the sizing will probably be difficult to call... I've got an HJC in XL now and its old though the padding isnt crshed but still probably would be tighter if it were new, considering the XL for the gp tech going off of the size charts vs the hjc, the place I plan on ordering from online has exchanged for stuff in the past that was too small, so I should be covered there......

only other problem will be when I park my street bike somewhere I'm going to have to chain my helmet to the building instead of the bike, lol....

My favorite helmet use to be the Shoei RF-1000. It was a good helmet that became unwearable after somebody crashed in it. I was forced to find a new helmet and picked up an Arai and a Shark RSR. The difference is night and day. My point is if you get higher end, that fit properly, the ride becomes so much more comfortable.

found this on motorcycle daily

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 26 May 2009 ? Arai ranks highest in satisfying motorcycle helmet owners for an 11th consecutive year, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction StudySM released today.

The study measures the overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet in three key factors: ventilation, face shield, and design and styling; which consist of 11 attributes: quietness; ventilation/air flow; de-fogging; face shield ability to keep wind out; face shield ability to resist scratching; ease of replacing face shield; scratch resistance of shell; color/graphic design; weight; ease of fastening the strap; and fit and comfort.

With a score of 830 on a 1,000-point scale, Arai ranks highest and performs particularly well in the ventilation and design and styling factors. Shoei follows with a score of 815 and performs well in face shield. Icon ranks third overall with a score of 806.

?Arai continues to improve in the areas critical to customer satisfaction, which has further differentiated it from other manufacturers,? said Tim Fox, research manager of the powersports practice at J.D. Power and Associates. ?Arai?s focus on fit and comfort?the most important consideration when purchasing a motorcycle helmet?and its ability to cater to different types of riders have given the manufacturer a consistent edge in satisfying customers.?

Overall satisfaction with motorcycle helmets has increased to an average of 766 in 2009?up 5 points from 2008?the highest level since the study?s inception in 1999.

The study finds that while the percentage of helmet owners who conducted research online before buying has remained relatively steady from 2008 at 36 percent, the proportion of helmet owners who purchased their helmet online has increased?up to 17 percent in 2009 from 14 percent in 2008. Additionally, those who purchased more expensive helmets ($200 or more) are more likely to both research and purchase their helmet online. More than one-half of these helmet owners researched online prior to their purchase, and 22 percent of them made their purchase online.

The 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 4,600 purchasers of new 2008 model-year motorcycles who provided information about their most recent helmet purchase experience and helmet use. The study was fielded in September and October 2008.

Have you worn a rx7 corsair? i was wondering how the vector shell measured up to a rx7 corsair and the differences. I am thinking about going with the haga black. Its just hard to find a xxl in stores for me to try on.

+1 on finding a helmet that fits well first and foremost.
Then worry about looking good. I have the ARAI Corsair Nakano and I'm very happy with the fit and finish. I'm sure AGV is good as long as it is comfortable.
