Update the resume, and throw it to the recruiters or contract companies. That's your best bet unless you have some very good contacts within the IT industry.

Sorry to hear about the job loss. :(

Resume is already floating around on all the major job sites... I have gotten a few calls already and some offers in the Chicago area, but am not in a position to move since my wife is employed locally as well. Will keep my fingers crossed.... Thanks for the advice

I am heavily involved in systems integrations. The company I work for is deeply involved in Data, Voice, & Video integrations. We have 3 separate groups that focus on specific applications but we all overlap at some point.

I manage my basement full of crap, have tons of certs but since I cant start out @ 100K, i 'll stick to my current job. And like some, I think i'd hate it if I HAD to do it every day.

Like anything, you can't start out in the extreme top of the pay bracket when you don't have any work experience.

So, what are some of these "tons of certs" you have? I'm interested to hear what they are and why you got them.

a+, MCSE, CCNA and 1/2 through CCNp

They are all technically expired now though cause i never kept up with them. I know i'll never need them. Got them thru a school. I do have some experience, but no where near enough to get the upper pay brackets. I can get MAYBE 40-50K a year here in Louisville. Im 99% certain Id be misserable if I worked in IT now though...

Ive gotten rid of most of my Cisco stuff from the house and remember so li ttle.. Im sure it'd come back to me easy but I dont want it to :D

Sorry to here that, my practice is always hiring. They have to, they laid off about 75% of our members in 2003 so now we're trying to build our numbers again. I PMd you.

The field sucks - avoid it. It's saturated and the high ups are constantly moving the jobs oversees.

I'm working with POS systems for a gas / convenience store chain now since it's stable but the pay sucks for the crap I gotta put up with. Computer guys arn't meant to be replacing wire that mice have chewed through and get their hands dirty when touching a keyboard. grrrr

Once I get caught up in money i'm going back to school and getting into something in the medical field (was thinking x-ray technician)

Corny, it's all in how you market yourself. I'm switching from full-time employee to a contractual consultant going from job site to job site. Being a full time employee was never truly stable in the field because of how dynamic it is, and now with high bandwidth most jobs can be done remotely. Thus, they can ship jobs to wherever it can be done.

However, as a service consultant, there will always be a market for people to come in and do short term contracts (2 weeks to a year). If you play the cards right, there will always be jobs there for you. :yesnod
