I ride the occasional standup down the highway. I quit doing stoppies after I almost flipped my R1. I used to be really good at them on my R6, I'd pull up a stoppie at like 80 mph. Then one day I misjudged one and near about flipped the R1...it came down hard, but upright, so i quit doing them. I can stand up on my seat on occasion. Just a few stunts here and there, no expert by any means.

 

not too many stunters here huh.. well as for me.. never got to scrape tail.. binned it b4 i got that far.. iwas getting 1st gear up nice and high about 5mph on up with the clutch.. but couldnt get the finesse needed to ride the rear brake...

I've gone 12 o'clock (or at least damn close to it) on my R1, but I've never scraped the tail and I can't ride it out that far. I really didn't feel comfortable doing it though. The bike felt wierd. I don't like the R1 as a stunt bike. Maybe it takes some getting used to though. I prefer Hondas because they seem to be more balanced. I am far from a hardcore stunter though. I do basic tricks, but that's all and even those need work. No tank wheelies or switchback endos or anything.

 

I was wondering the same thing. Where are the stunters? I can easily ride a sit-down wheelie for 1/4 mile and up to 1/2 mile on a good day. I can ride stand-ups pretty good but not quite as far a sit downs. Also, I can ride a tank wheelie 50-75 feet. I just started practicing endos a few weeks ago. I think that a steering dampener would be nice to avoid the occasional front wheel wobble. As for tail scraping... Not quite yet. But maybe soon.

After riding a friends' 929 and 954, I can see why the hondas are better for stunting. It seemed to be more stable. Also, the balance point was a lot lower than my R1's which made it easier to hold steady and turn. I understand that gixxers are the same way.

Does anyone (who can do a 12 O'clock) have any good advice on how to do a 12 O"clock wheelie. What about regearing you bike and tire pressure?

I have found that a good wheely rode hard and long serves as a pretty good.........panty juicer..........with chicks. Plus, good looking chicks just seem to bring out the best in you.

 

I feel better now after reading some more posts. I have walked a stand up over a mile before, and about 3/4 mile on a sit down.

tail scrappin...

I clutch em up in 1st and slowly 12 o' clock em...bout 5 mph....I like to pull in the clutch and hit the limiter when Im up like that...thats how you kill em......but ive yet to have the tail touch....I think if it touches your done...ive been almost too far to get back on two wheels and it was still about 3-4 inches from touchin I was told so.....Ill let you know when I do it or do it and eat it....

Yes if you hit tail you are done. If I had a digital camera or a scaner I would show you some pic of my bike after. That is why you see a metal or wheelie bar of the back because metal slides and plastic digs in. It was the coolest feeling to be that up and down. I do mine by siting down and I start them at 5mph clutch it up then ride brake and add power to have it slowly come to the point of touch. When I hit I was at about 30mph I just might have been to slow but I don't think I will try it agian because it cost me 2k to fix.
Have fun tring just watch out. Were your gear just in case of an opps.:finger

i've scraped tail ... once. i binned it bad. i was never any good at stunting anyway, so i just leave it to the other guys now.

anyway, from being up there, i do believe it's possible to scrape tail on the R1 and still put it down on two wheels. i only scraped for about 30 feet, but it moved right along fine. you have to tap the brake to bring it back, though. i couldn't reach it because my legs were flailing behind me...

I used to scrape on my 2000 all day...I was talking about the '02 before...but I was wrong...I scraped today....a nice juicy one....hooked a little on the high mount mig...but after 3 or 4 times its all good....I was doin it all day today...I now have no taillight outer clear layer thing....but I fucken rock!!!!!!Oh and those metal wheelie bar things are for PUSSYS!!!!!:rock :rock :rock

Your not done if you touch tail. you have to have good smooth throttle and brake control. you don't just smash the tail into the ground, you wlak it at 12 and lightly scrape the tail and you won't loose control. It takes lots of practice.

"Wheelie bar things" (scrape bar) are not for pussys!!! They aren't there to catch you or stop you from looping, they are there for a reason. Any good stunter doesn't want to just scrape, you have to be able to do tricks while you are scraping along on the bar. For example, do you think and apehanger is possible without the scrape bar. ALL GOOD STUNTERS HAVE THEM SO THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT FOR PUSSYS. nuf said

The only thing I think a scrape plate would be good for would be to put your foot in so you can do circle wheelies (donut wheelies). Now that shit requires some skill!

"no trick while scraping requires skill"??? i agree that circle wheelie are the next big thing everyone who wants to be competitive will have to do, just like scrape tricks were this year! but to say scrape tricks require no skill ... and doing the trick is only half the hard part, continuing the wheelie AFTER the trick has been completed, that takes real skill and bike control!

I guess the only thing i can say to this is....have you ever heard of the wheelie boys???? tail scraping all day...and never a wheelie bar.....thats a cheat. the wheelie boys do it all day no bars...and i scrape my tail all the time now with no bar....i mean i hooked on my exhaust and almost ate it the first few times and my skill kicked in....i didnt eat it...now i scrape every day and have no problems....shit i can even park my bike with out a bar so....get on your 2002 r1 and do it...if you cant...you have no skill...i stunt...i scrape ..i park....on bumpy crappy new york streets.....thats skill in my book and wheelie bars are for pussys

i been past 12 o'clock i broke my tail and undertail about 5 inches from the back off the bike.

 

oh yea i forgot...i broke my tailbone too when it looped. that thing still hurts and man after it happened i thought i shit my pants thats what it felt like. i held my ass thinking oh no not diarhea in front of the guys...then i blacked out and fell. turns out i had a pretty good concusion
