I live in Indiana, and we have no helmet law, but I always wear my helmet. I think it is a matter of choice, and I don't care either way...I just want to know how you do it? Don't your eyes water? What about the bugs? I have a barhopper (1975 Superglide) but I don't ride over 60 on it and I still wear a beanie just in case, but I've seen guys on sportbikes doing 90+ and I'm just curious how they do it.

Edit: Wow, someone brought this post back from 2002! These were my Harley barhopper days before I converted! Wow, how times change.

Helmets?

To me, it's a personal choice issue, if you are over 18 and of sound mind. Same for seat belts, Alchohol, smoking and the rest. The statistics to prove public costs for these " unsafe " activities are bogus and easily disproved:p
That being said, I think you are a total Jackass for not wearing a helmet and proper gear. I've ruined 4 helmets in race incidents, one on the street.
In this country we should have the right to be stupid, the right to prove that Darwin may have been on to something with his theory
;) Sometimes a big bug or a rock will getcha', last summer I hit 3 birds, one of them a direct shot above my visor at about 100mph. My Gixxer buddy said it was really cool looking, the bird literally exploded:eek: , and he came behind me thru a parade of feathers:) That gave me a good headache............ without a helmet?:no

I'm interested in hearing your case for easily disproving these statistics. Please share.

Jeeez...not wear a helmet?? Is that a serious question? The day I don't wear a helmet..pigs will fly out of my ass. Hmmm...i've been riding 15 years and I can't remember once that I've never gone out without a helmet. Thats not even an option for me.

I'd rather urinate fire than ride without a helmet. :::not that I've ever urinated fire:::but if I could or knew how to:::

Most guys I've seen riding without helmets are on Harleys (enough said) or either the 16 year old punk who believes he is bullet proof. I would like to believe rest of the sane motorcyclists (like myself) know better.:crash

:hellobye Well I kinda new around here but I've been reading for a while glad to see that every one on here feels the same about helmets as I do. I've stuffed it up a couple of times on my old bike and from my experience the pavement always wins: PAVEMENT 3
DEX 0. Always happy to have my mellon intact.:thumbup

birds!

I had to laugh when I read Olddog's tale =- I did the same thing once riding my old triumph! I was motoring along on the way to my boat when a seagull swooped down for something and hit me square in the chest - let me tell you, If it weren't for leathers, the fucking bird probably would have impailed my chest! and boy, those suckers are heavY!!! Looking back it must have looked pretty funny, but even with leathers it hurt like a son of a bitch, and that was on a triumph going only 65 or 70...I don't even wanna fathom the ramifications of that happening on my R1 doing a buck sixty on the ocean parkway!

Bottom line - YES, in some states it IS choice - but I think it's pretty much common sense that wearing your gear gives you a much better shot, you just never know!

OMG....I went out riding last night to the local gathering spot here in Fort Wayne, IN, and there were about 20 or so sportbikes there and I only saw about 7 or 8 helmets, and 2 of those were for chics on the back!!!!
What is up with that?? We went for a quick lap down some back roads and some of these itiots were doing 100+, and riding standups off of the redlights......

YO...

That's one of the worst things - seeing guys stunting without helmets - usually its the young idiiots who think they're invincible...Especially now where open class bikes AND even the 600s have remarkable power and can easily surprise even the best of us, it sucks to see some squidly moron trying shotgun wheelies for the first time without a helmet! Case in point: The 16 year old kid around the block from me trying aforementioned wheelies on his older brothers liter gixxer - this happened last year in Levitown, last I heard the kid had come out of his coma, but the scull fracture was pretty damning and he had to have a shunt built into his brain to drain the fluid out- I forget the name of his condition, but he's lucky to be alive!

wear that mushroom cap

Yep,
always wear a helmet. We have to deal with rocks, street concrete, bugs, cherry bombs (cig butts), and teary eyes if no helmet. All those listed hamper my riding confidence. And in this game, Confidence is everything. I feel naked without it. And I hear every little noise my bike makes without a helmet-aggravating!!

I agree whole-heartedly with OldDog on the first page. It should be everyone's choice whether to be stupid or not. Personally, I wear one 100% of the time. I learned to ride in Louisiana where the heat/humidity is always at least 100 degrees in the summer, so I learned to deal with the heat and just accept it. I've seen several guys get permenant brain damage from not wearing them, that's not for me. This issue seems to be more of a Harley rider issue since I see 99% of them around Tulsa not wearing anything except the DOT approved, skull saving dew rags on their head.

I believe in Darwin's rule too, but sometimes we need to throw a little chlorine in the gene pool to help weed out the not so smart folks. This is done with freedom of choice in the bike world.

I have to be honest and say that since I have been riding on the street, I have worn my helmet only cause the law enforced it and when I hit the New Hampshire, or the Conn border the helmet was gone. I hated riding with it on. However, ever since joining this forum and talking to all you guys I wear my helmet all the time regardless of where. You guys have to many freak stories and images burned into my head. I think that the other thing that purswaded(sp) me to keep my lid on is that I got a new Arai helmet. That thing compared to my last one is about fifty times lighter and has alot more visibility.
