I just want to see how many people started with a 1000cc bike or higher as their first bike. Like a R1, GSXR1000, TL1000R, or GSXR1300..... Something like that as their first bike, and also if u know someone who started riding with a 1000cc or higher. Just wanted to see how many people and how was their experience starting with a 1000cc or more?

this isn't a fair question since there is more than likely a high proportion of individuals who started on a literbike that aren't here, for one reason or another, to answer your question.

Started as in my very first bike ever? or started as in my first licensed road bike. I have been riding motorcycles for as long as I can remember so no the first bike I threw a leg over wasnt a liter bike but my first road bike was close, I was 19 years old (1991) and bought a 1986 Kawaski ZL900 Eliminator. Drove it for 3 years and I was very fortunate not to have died on several occasions. I can honestly say that past riding experience / instinct saved me. Had I been on a bike with much more power like a Gixxer 1100 of the day, theres a good possibility I wouldnt be here today.

I started on an R1. It was my first street bike. Piece of cake as long as you respect the power.

I'm not sure why peeps make such a big deal out of it. It's not a big deal at all. Its really not hard to understand that the farther you twist the throttle the faster it goes. :p

I did:blush Never felt the need to be pressured into riding over my head while I was learning though. However, with that being said, I still would not recomend someone learning how to ride on one of these monsters :fact

I dont know if it makes a difference or not, but a common thread stands out amost all of the riders here who started on a "Big Bore" bike. We all did it during the late 80's early 90's, the bikes were no where near the performance level of today, and there also was not the influence to do some of the stupid things people do today. I dont remember ever seeing someone doing a stand up down the highway much less a group of riders doing it, or anyone trying to do stoppies at intersections,.................

Point being, the bikes have changed, the times of changed, and newbies dont have anymore skill now than we did back then. I think the higher level of performance bikes have today along with the idea of how to ride bikes on the street today has a lot to do with the perception most experienced riders have of what bike a beginner should start out on.

My first street bike was a CBR900RR in 1998. I just bought a 04R1. I never crashed either. My good friend just bought a ZX12R as his first bike only because he is very tall and is comfortable on it. He is very mature and does not go beyond his limits. I actually sometimes wish I got a 600 just because they handle so damn well and are not that much slower than the liter bikes when you consider I do not get to go to the track (the nearest track is 200 miles away) and ride on public roads. The 600 is too fast for the public roads while the liters are way too fast for public roads.

In my opinion whether or not a newbie is going to crash his/her first bike depends about 95% on the persons mentality and maturity to realize they need to learn at their own pace and not be suckered into trying to keep up with their friends who have been riding for years. I believe as a friend you have the responsability to make sure you tell your newbie buddy no to be an ass and try to keep up with you. I stress to my newbie buddy ever time we go out that I will always be waiting at the next light or stop sign for him and not to try to keep up unless he feels completly comfertable. Too many people try to show off for newbies and the newbies feel they will look slow and stupid if they do not keep up.

Most of the guys who start out on liter bikes... you never really see them at trackdays or in the mountains with worn out knee sliders, but I do notice them backed in at bike nights in shorts and t-shirts.:2bitchsla

I have rode all my life on MX bikes and some mopeds and then rode a few BMW's of my uncles...My first bike was and still is the 2000 R1...I have had a couple close tank slappers getting on it to hard out of the corner and one while hitting a couple bad pot holes off base going over 90MPH and luckily came out of it...All I can say is respect your bike and learn what you and your bike are capable of and dont go out riding with your buddies until you are comfortable with yourself and your bike...

I made the mistake of going out canyon carving with 20 guys on a regular basis when I first got my bike...From the moment we left base and headed up to the back roads in Auburn, California we were all racing...Totally illegal...A couple of my buddies went down on seperate occasions and we were all content on going out next saturday and doing it all over again...Where I am from, no sportbike riders wear jackets, pants, or back protectors like I see most people do on this forum...I would ride in cargo pants and T-Shirt...You were looked at like a little kid if you wore a jacket...So be warned be careful and dont fall into peer pressure either...

All in all, ride safe and ride with-in your limits and a liter bike is a good choice... :hellobye
