Who still uses the stock exhaust?

I'm curious to see just how many folks chose NOT to get a slip on pipe or full system for their bike. Who on this board uses the stock exhaust? Why? Do you have any plans to change to an aftermarket system, either full system or slip on?

Let's hear from everyone on this. I'm curious.

Thanks,
Scott

Pointless Aesthetics

Exhausts are a poser mod. It is for the person that wants to look (and sound) fast with out really doing it.

If you actually want to go fast, spend your exhaust money ($300-1200) on track days. I guarantee you will be faster on your stock bike with a few track days than you would be on a trick R1.

To each his own. I'd rather know how to ride than look like it.

poser mod, come on now.

Still stock exhaust. Figured the 10,300 I invested in the bike a couple months ago will have to hold me over for awhile. Probably end up going with a full pretty soon.
Why? You may see 10hp, but what does that do? I unless you are V. Rossi, you do not fully use the 140hp that were free with the bike. Why buy more unused hp? I am not picking on you, I am just curious about the logic behind it.

What does it hurt?.....

when youre lacking in certain areas, make it up in the straights:D

Ive never heard a gearhead yet say...Hey..I dont want more HP.....

oh, by the way..stock exh....not cause of the money, but because im afraid to go through the nightmare of mappin the bike to get it right, it runs great now and if it aint broke, dont fix it :thumbup

I have a D&D slip-on but I went back to stock. I live in a stuck-up neighborhood and I was constantly being harassed by the police about the noise, and the neighbors kept complaining (although I'm sure the full throttle rips up and down my road don't healp either). Anyway, I've got the stock exhaust back on it and now I can cause my mayhem in near silence. I was suprised at how miuch low-end power I got back with the stock set-up.

If anyone wants a slip-on M4 cb for a 98 (may fit other years), I'd be willing to sell mine (just installed my Devil high mount). It's a little banged up, but nothing that couldn't be take care of easily (you can do it or I can do it). No damage to the cb canister, only the pipe and the metal brackets.

I wouldn't characterize aftermarket exhausts as "poser mods," but they are almost always strictly for aesthetics. Most of us will never use the R1 to 75% of its capability, so a few more horsepower won't make much of a difference.

On the other hand, I know that I bought the R1 partly because it is the best looking sportbike on the planet (except for maybe the 996/998). So an aesthetic modification is right in line with what one of the things I want the bike to do for me, which is catch. It already goes ridiculously fast, so why not make it look and sound better.

I still run the stock too. Not because I can't afford a new one but because I can't afford the tickets. I like the way an aftermarket system sounds better but I screw around so much that I don't need to draw attention. If I didn't ride so hard I would have an aftermarket exhaust just for the sound.

I still have my stock exhaust.. which is funny since I have only had the bike for a week. Typically, it's the first thing to go.

The stock can is so quiet... all my friends with aftermarket systems on their bikes get so much attention. I love flying through town or backroads and not a have a cop or a single person look at me. :D

The bike has move power than I need right now. I doubt an aftermarket exhaust will make me any faster on backroads. I mean, come on... it's a freaking 1000! My friend Dave races at Nelson Ledges almost every weekend. There are guys there with ALL the race add-ons. He can lap many of them on his totally stock R1.

That's just my $0.02 though. ;)

Stock Exhaust

Well guys, I have the best of both worlds. My exhaust is stock but louder than most aftermarket systems. I don't like quiet bikes, loud pipes save lives, if you've ever ridden on the 401 or any of the 4 series Hwy's for that matter you know what I mean. Anyways I gutted my stock can ( 4 plus hours of pure bliss HA ) drilled out the rivits and cut out one of the baffel plates. To be honest I think the bike runs better or it seems too. I'd say the db rating is 90-95 or more, so if you have the time and the right tools go for it and save yourself some money for a Race Tech Gold Valve Kit, power is nothing without control.

I like being quiet. When cruisin' by yourself at a buck twenty down the country roads you don't get much attention drawn to you with a stock exhaust... Stealth mode is cool. If I could find an aftermarket pipe that gives me some juice, but it still quiet I would buy it in a hearbeat, but for now, quiet is good. :)

hummmm...

Exactly my thought........I rode with a full D&D for the past 2 years on my 929.....and I think I'm deaf......what....did you say something......

I think I will leave the stock exhaust on for a few hundred miles until me and my bike become as one.....then when she and I decide we need more power, I will get an exhaust.

poser mod???

how can you resist the sound of an aftermarket exhaust on an inline 4 engine...i think that a well tuned inline 4 is one of the best sounds in the world. it is music to my ears. and you can't deny the fact that at the strip/ track (or just plain ripping on the street) it is more than a poser mode--- it really works. :fact

I have a Graves slip on and think It Is the best modification you can do for the money. Only loud when you want it to be, if I see a cop I shift to a higher gear. The stock can has a cat. converter[at least in Ca and parts of europe] so why would you want to keep it stock? As far as poser factor?..ha ha I don't think so at least not for me. On my previous bikes, 99R1 and 98yzf-750 I kept them stock. But I'm glad I switced to the dark side of mojo on my 02R1.

Tracks days? I'm sure you can learn a lot and are worth the money but don't think for a second you don't get just as many squids and posers riding track days. I have a friend that rides track and he won't even ride on Fridays as according to him it Is down right dangerous, the squids race full speed down the straights but can't take corners safely. As far as being able to use the extra HP of an aftermarket pipe etc? I know I can't at least not in the curves but when I need to pass a group of cars or a large group of Harley's, than yes I need all the HP I can get. Where I ride the opportunity to pass is very often over the double yellow were maximum acceleration Is of the utmost importance.

No No, Mods are not just for poser factor as they have a practical side. Besides it is fun to mojo your new baby. My dream list would be as follows, carbon fiber full fairings, carbon gas tank, magnesium wheels, Graves ram air box with velocity stacks, power commander. Bottom line is Yamaha R1 Is a great bike stock but It can be improved with some basic mods. Peace:beer

poser? i think not. can't use 75% of the stock bike? i think not. i can use 110% of my bike and would like some more. it's not all about top speed. it's how fast can i get thru 3rd gear. i put 149 hp to the rear wheel and look to get 155 before i'm done. i guess we all like to be heard, right?

I have stock exhaust. Dont have the cash flow as of now to get any mods, but will soon get a full micron, more than likely.

SLIP-ON Akrapovic. Not for the horse power, but for the looks. Compliments the bike!:D

The only thing is popping on deacceleration, but I may puchace the IVAN's Jet Kit just to get rid of that.

Still stock I like the looks but more than that I like the stealth mode.

I still have my stock exhaust. I gutted it though to hold me over. I cant stand a quiet Can on my bike. Although the gutted one is almost too loud. I'm going to be getting a Full Akra system with a PCIIIr in a week or two.:rock
