Just thought i would throw this out there for discussion. When one buys a new bike yes i think sales tax is reasonable, but not on a used bike, and here in Minnesota sales tax is 6.5% BOO!and a use bike thats over 8G's can add up fast, so i said piss on the DMV! when i transfered the title of my bike i said i only paid 1500 for it:lol. So i screwed uncle sam out of about 7000 of taxabe dollars! I just curious if anyone else does this when they buy a used bike, its like free Mods!:riding

I thought any kind of taxes are stupid... :crash

evor1,

I don't think they call, not sure how it works in the US, but in Canada, they have a little booklet to check the minimun price allowed for that current bike. So even if you really bought the bike for $5, we can't just pay tax for $5, have to pay the tax on the minimun allowed sale price. Also, we have 2 taxes on Canada, but only have to pay one of them if you bought it used from someone, you still have to pay both taxes if you got the used bike from a dealer. :bash

Probably not a good idea to say these kind of things on a public forum. You never know who's lurking in the shadows. :fact However, I do know how you feel.

Sure we all have and do use this trick but here is the ultimate result and it's gonna get worse. In West Virginia now there is a $500 minimum sale price...meaning at the 5% tax there is a minimum of $25 in tax and that includes charitable gifts. Also the DMV has all of its tellers equipped (even the old ladies) with NADA guides to assess the value and if you are claiming that you paid a penny less then you have to have a notorized statement from the seller. Uncle Sam can be a hungry bastard at times, but I guess he's really got alot of mouths to feed. Kinda makes me :ugh

When the seller signs over the title to the bike they put in the price and that is what you are taxed on. If that is not filled in then they tax you on Blue Book value.

In Iowa we can now claim we "Traded" a vehicel and get partial (or full) credit for he vehicle trade t ooffset the amount you are taxed on...

Overall I do think we need some taxes, but not to the excess that we are going with . I don't think we want private corporations being put in control of repairing roads and maintaining the social services we have. But what pisses me off to no end is when I see some guy selling dope on a corner and he says he's unemployed but gets social security.

All that said I've been contacted by the State of Florida at least 4 times for selling vehicles below blue book. Each time I tell them the vehicle was not working when I sold it.

Once a vehicle is sold new and taxed, I don't think it should be taxed again everytime it's sold after that. This is double taxation.

I can see a paying a small flat fee to cover the paperwork, etc...

In Nevada they go by MSRP and it goes down 10% each year, we get raped here. When I bought my R1 I only paid $8999 but I got charged a tax based on the MSRP which was a lot more than 8999.

Sales tax should only be paid once. You don't pay tax on your groceries twice when u eat them do you?

Here in KS we pay 7.2% tax on the BLUE BOOK VALUE of your vehicle. If you buy a wrecked 99 Explorer for 2000.00 You have to pay tax on 10,000.00 (the Blue book value) Some times junkyards are buying vehicles and paying more tax than what they paid for the car. Now THAT is rediculous.

We have to do that because of everyone trying to weisel out of paying sales tax. For example everyone that mentioned buying bikes for a few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand...Thanx guys :(

Don't you also pay personal property tax on your vehicles every year?

Time to vote in some new state politicians if you ask me......

After I sold my GSXR, I was contacted twice by mail by the Gov. asking me to verify the sale price that the seller had claimed. I ignored them, and would have told them to @%*# OFF! if they called me, but I'm sure they catch a few people out who claim lower sale prices when the seller doesn't know.

Here in Canada, we actually pay tax on the tax that we pay in some instances (gasoline). Now that is a crime, but it's OK, it's the government, they can do anything!
