Why put a power commander on a R1?

I've been riding for sometime. 600's, 750's, 954. And now I have my R1! 06 50th by the way, which I am madly in love with. (side bar for a sec) my 954 was and still is my favorite. Better throttle response and everyday rider friendly. Ok with that said, NO I AM NOT GOING TO BUY ANOTHER ONE since I feel that way. I don't think I can get around the rider friendly part but maybe someone can help me out with tuning it to get the throttle feel I'm looking for. None of my bikes ever had mods. So I am wondering why would you put a power commander on a R1? It already has more than enough power and speed for the streets. Any other mods I might consider making to my stock R1? :boom

Graves velocity stacks, slip ons & y pipe & power commanded, and drop a tooth on front sprocket is a great start

If your bike is stock I dont think you have to worry about a PC just yet. But if you have aftermarket exhaust or smog block offs etc, you should look into getting a PC just to make sure your bike has the correct fuel to air ratio stuff like that. When I put my full graves system on my bike was running lean, causing it to run hot and melt my tailight, the PC corrected this issue for my.

some decent mods to start off with would be smog block offs, exhaust, sprockets and chain, some aftermarket v-stacks...

Smog block offs arent going to do anything for you unless you are getting auto tune, or u are planning on doing dyno runs

PC3 with a dyno tune transformed my bike. Has power everywhere now.

Thanks to all the feed back. But my question still remain, why would you put a power commander on a liter bike? Isn't it for more power? Or cn it be used for tuning? An if it can be used for tuning why not just flash your computer and adjust the gears?

How does slip one enhance performance? And going one down on the front sprocket, wouldn't that only increase torque? Or is torque on the low end what I should be looking for?
Zwilks14 suggest y pipe? My pipes are already stock y pipe correct? And what are stacks?

There is a huge misconception about Power Commander's, especially on this forum. A power commander is just an alternate fuel control module, it is not a power adder or some magical box that will add 15hp. Your bike comes tuned from the factory with general, universal fuel numbers in mind. That being said, climate, atmospheric pressure and and altitude will play a big part in untuning those numbers depending on where you are located on the globe. For instance. An 06 R1 will have certain characteristics in an area that is close to the ocean like California and at 0' above sea level. Take that same bike and run it in Denver Colorado and you will see the characteristics change significantly. The bike will struggle to make the same power and have issues in cooling, torque and throttle response. Adding a power commander gives you the ability to fine tune those fuel numbers so that your ECU is adding more/less fuel at each stage of RPM to accommodate the excess/lack of air intake to reach the perfect Air/fuel ratio. In all reality to achieve this you would need a dyno tune to maximize those numbers to create the perfect map for your bike in it's region. There are downloadable maps that you can pull from the website, but using one is just a crap shoot since you really don't know where the tune was done. These can actually create problems by making the bike run too rich or lean.

Is a PC worth the money? It really just depends on where you are and what the plan is for the bike.
My suggestion if you want excellent throttle response, adjust the throttle cables and eliminate the slack so that there is no dead spot. Change your gearing by going down one tooth on the front sprocket (from 17 to 16) then get a set of Factory pro velocity stacks, Cat eliminator pipe and a BMC filter. Then spend the money and get a PC or Bazzaz (I prefer the Bazzaz, better fine tuning) and get it dyno tuned by a reputable tuner. It will be a completely different bike.

get a custom y pipe, your stock one has a cat in it wich restricts airflow and also maintains heat ( you have probably noticed how hot your leg and a$s get when you ride.
also you wouldnt flash any bike older then 09 because there really is no benefit, however on the 09 and up it is very beneficial. and you do have velocity stacks in your airbox, but most likely they are the stock ones. a set of graves or factory pro will do wonders on how smooth your powerband is, throttle will be butter!

That sounds like a solid plan there SSPilot! I have a K&N filter. I seen two different kind of stacks. The all tall ones or the ones that are similar to the ones I have? And can I just mod my Y to eliminate the restriction?

Y do u prefer factory pro over graves?

The Factory Pro Stacks were designed around the gap in the low end of the 04-06 models. They are all tall stacks so they help boost air intake at mid RPM. The Graves are 2 tall and 2 short. The boost is in the mid upper range. For the street and small tracks (like all over Texas) the FP's made the most linear power/torque in the most used area's of RPM.

I'm a mechanic. Just not on motorcycles yet. I do some work just not the major stuff. Waiting to get a nice setup to be able to pull the whole engine out and put it on a stand. Don't want to do back yard work on my bike! I seen the how to on gutting the Y! But should I leave the servo alone? And gutting the y, is there something that goes with that, that I should be doing at the same time ie; tuning or something?

Yo yo frm aussie!
Ive an 07' just done full graves, K&N air filter, block off plates, PC5 & auto tune, 4 tooth up on rear and 1 on front. And f*#k me it has made what i was looking for!! That throttle response you want. Its not boring now, as i was getting a little tired with the lag. NO MORE!! Its gotten me scared of it again!! Hahaaa love it!!!
