Went down yesterday at 70

Hey guys...just wanted to let my fellow brethern know that I had a mishap yesterday on I-26 in South C. near Columbia. I have never gone down before and man...was it the scariest thing I've ever gone through. I was overtaking a blazer when all of a sudden he slammed on his brakes. :boom I had already initiated the turn but wasn't going to make it past him so i had to slam on my front brakes and try to straighten out. Tank slap occured and I went down at about 70 (plus or minus). I honestly can't believe I'm typing this message. I should be dead. Or atleast hurt a lot more than I am. I've got a borken rib, many strawberries, and a spraigned wrist and ankle. While going down I just kept thinking, "Please don't die! Oh God, I can't believe this is happening! Please don't die..." When I finally skidded to a halt I knew that I had to get to the side of the road. I'm sure the people in their cars behind me soiled themselves when they saw me get up and walk away. I got to the side of the road I colapsed. My girlfriend was in a few cars in front of me and was scared to death. :scared 30 minutes later I was in the car driving home. Amazingly! :jump
The bike is ok. Amazingly the Akra. Sys. is completely unmarked. Strangely so is my helmet. My leathers...different story. Moral of the story...wear you gear! Wear your gear. Shit happens! Wear your gear. It will save your life. My thanks go out to God, Fieldsheer, and my own good sense to wear my gear. Learn from me. I'd look like a burnt hamburger were it not for my gear. Anywho...you guys ride safe. The roads haven't seen the last of me on an R1. Live and learn. :rock :riding :rock

I feel ya. I went down at 60 overtaking a car. Tank slaps and everything. This was back in 89' on my 3month old gix750.

I ended up laying in the fast lane of the freeway with the sole of my left shoe staring at me. Ankle totaly demolished. An off duty medic in his jeep was behind me, pulled over and set flares. Then called the ambulance from his CB.

For me, I believe dude was an angle because my buddies don't remember him or where the flares came from. No one at the scene remembered him or knew who called in the medics.

Not trying to take your story from you but I believe you and I both have a higher power watching over us bigtime, cuz it was more than just luck.

Peace and rubber side down.

I'm so glad you're not hurt. God helps those that help themselves. You were looking out for you. There should be a sticky called "WEAR YOUR GEAR" for posts like yours. I did the same thing, a 70mph lowside that I jogged away from, unscathed. You are smart to have worn your gear.

Here is a topic where you can all direct the newbie or even experienced riders that think they are invulnerable.....

We may be branded "safety police",but to hell with that...those that knows......er.......know.

Make sure to post plenty of raw hide piccies.

hey just a question, i live in arizona and there is no helmet law here, but i usually ride with one. if i am just going to school or something i will wear just a helmet, but if i am on the highway i wear jeans and a joe rocket jacket. how bad would i get scraped up if i dumped going 45? :scared

liteovan,

Glad to hear you made it through this in good shape. Nice when your bike isn't too rashed either. Get well and thank God. Oops, you already did. Be safe.

DJTHEMAC,

Hard to know how bad you'd get road rashed at 45mph. It depends on how you slide, roll, ragdoll, superman, or what you hit while doing any of the above. All in all, you could be F'd up bad enough, more so if something is coming at you at 40+mph(other vehicles...) If you fall, and don't get hurt, you came out lucky. I heard of some old man who fell off a moped at 15mph, whacked his mellon(on a curb) and isn't with us anymore...(very unlucky!)

I live in FL and there is no helmet law here either if you have a
certain amount of insurance (not much) on yourself. I would
never think about riding with out one. If you took a fall at 45mph
with just jeans and slid down the road you would be in a world
of hurt. The jeans might last 10 to 15 feet if you were lucky.
I'm just as guilty as anyone else because I do the same thing
too. Howerver, I just spent nearly 500.00 on some J.R. Speed
master pref leather riding/racing pants and Speed Master riding
boots. I'll have them on when I ride along with my jacket. I don't
care how hot it gets.

Theres a saying "Id rather sweat than bleed" that many people adopt after theyve been down hard enough.

Dam glad you are ok and nobody ran over you. Wear your gear everyone.

When I first got my 99R1 I only heard about tank slappers until one day I passed a car on the orgeta hwy. I made the mistake of gassing hard in 3rd gear while riding on the double yellow. Tankslapper at 90mph and somehow i made my pass without crashing.

The thought of 'Please dont die' is very familiar. I remember overtaking a car and thinking I'n not gona make it,slammed the anchors on front end went at about 60mph and was bouncing down the road thinking the very same thing.Oncoming traffic heading my way.

When I stood up the guy who's car my bike hit said and I quote " I cant believe you just got up I was sure you were gona die"

Glad to hear you're Ok bro... I was also saved by wearing full gear recently too. If it wasn't for "Angel Arai" I'm sure I would be dead already 'cause my mellon touched down hard enough that I blacked out momentarily.

Wear your gear and be safe everyone!!!

All it took for me was one crash in my gear (my first crash) and I was a convert. Just looking at sueded up thighs and shoulders, and a chip out of the chin gaurd of my lid scared me bad enough to always wear head to toe protection. All that missing leather and plastic would have been missing flesh on my arms, legs and face.

Totally agree. They are those that have been down and those that will go down. Just hope people are smart enough to wear gear the first time they do.

Liteovem, good story. I know when i went down in may (roughtly a 60mph low side) After I finished tumbling and sliding, I jumped up and ran to my bike, shed a few tears and checked myself out. Which I had a scrape on my hand (wore through the SP1) and my knee was a little swollen and scraped (Wearing denim)

Yeah our gear is our "cage" an exoskeleton is all we got

D3...Hehe my thought I had (and even after the crash was over)was "oh please dont **** up my bike, i just switched to liability"
