Hey people,
i've had a 99 r1 for about 6 months now and am looking to upgrade but dont know what to yet, a few bikes i like are a variety of sizes but im not sure whether ill regret going to a smaller bike with less power??
the bikes im looking at are the 3 gixxers between 04-07, a zx636 05-07, r6 and r1 05-07 and also thinkin a zx10 07ish but am unsure because its a heavy bike in my opinion.
any help would be appreciated on your views on looks, performance, comfort, etc
thanks

Why do you want to go down on power? I don't think you'll be happy. But that is just me. I know I would definitely regret it.
My vote is for the R1 05-07.

I think you'd regret it too, but I'm a horsepower addict!

The ONLY way to be sure what you're buying is right for you, and not an internal wreck, is to test ride it. Get out to as many shops as you can and test ride everything you're interested in. You're going to spend a lot of money...you have to be sure you're buying the right bike for you.:)

The old R1's are like modern 600-750s. Going for a modern 600 or gixxer 750 and you will be right where you were power wise, but going to a new 1k bike, now thats a huge HP boost

Wonder if Blur1 will be pleased to know he has the equivelent of a modern 600 :scared :hammer: :hammer:

I don't much like the look of them, but the Gixxer 1000 is an awesome bike to ride. It's got the stomp of your old girl and the top end of a newer R1, a brilliant gearbox and neutral handling. Try em all if you can....:)
And the build quality of a Lada :fact :lol

exactly! newer 600s do go damn fast.. they're lighter, hell of a lot more flickable... but you still have to wring their neck to get there!!!
i would not go from a 1st gen R1 to a wimpy sixer...

04-06 R1 gets my vote as well... bit down on torque but you'll love the top end!!:hammer:

Older liter bikes still have +30 horse from a 600 and that's a big difference. Just stay with a liter just like everyone else is saying

I had a friend go from an 00 R1 to an 07 750. He wasn't used to how quickly FI bikes power comes on and wrecked the 750 within minutes of riding it when getting on the throttle and trying to take a turn too fast. There's a definitely a noticeable difference in going from the older bikes to newer FI bikes. I'd go with the 750.

I'd say it really depends on how you ride. Owning both, I'd say it's a trade off between having great torque and having great flickability and corner speed.

So... what's more fun to you? Trying to carry as much corner speed as possible, or getting the bike squared off and stood up ASAP so you can get deep into the throttle? If you can't decide, get a GSXR-750 as the happy medium. :)

I think you will def regret it. I sold my 04 R1 a few years back and about a year later bought an 08 R6 and was severly disappointed.

I'm sure you hit 185 All the time. If your a true roadie a new R6 might make you raise your eyebrow at your 99 R1. I have an 01' R6, it's had a little work done, but it never disappoints. Especially on the street. And a new one with work? I wish I had the dough! Why do so many prefer the 600 series at the track?

I drove my buddy's 07 R6 and it is way more nimble and revs easier it seems than my 08 R1... as for power.. I didn't really get a chance to give it full throttle so I can't tell u :(

But definitely the newer 600s are close to the older 1000s in terms of power to weight ratio. Also, even the new 1000s are way more nimble than a 99 (My 08 R1 is more nimble than the 00 R6 I had)

sooo.......went out on the test drive today and fowlers give me a lovely black gixxer on a 09 plate, could not complain with the looks but once i started riding it (bare in mind just got of my r1) and it felt like a completly different bike, it was quite easy to get used to because i swear the bike was guiding me through the corners as if it had cruise control. so i poodled through the city as some traffic about got onto some lovely little a-roads and i give it some stick and it had the front wheel up a liitle bit in first gear but nothing great(r1 would of chucked me off the back by now ;) ) and i wanted to know where this 180bhp was so i jumped onto a motorway to find it and ooh boy i found it in triple figures....oops i mean at 70mph ;) shame the powerband is so high that you cant enjoy it, got back to the dealer and had a little chat about things and decided i needed to test drive an r1 rather than a zx10 so i now need to find somewhere with a demonstration bike as fowlers havent got one and bristol kawasaki think there ÂŁ10k insurance xs is not a good thing for me to drive a zx10 :(
the search for a new r1 test bike begins now :)
