wrapping exhaust for exessive heat, good or bad idea??

I live in the desert and I find my R1 is unbearable to ride in hot weather cause of the heat pouring out of the bike along with 100➕ degree temps,, will wrapping the exhaust cause more harm than good??

do you have an aftermarket y pipe? if not, that's where a lot of heat seeps out because the stock one is cheap mild steel. the cat also does a pretty good job building up heat.

other than the ypipe, the rest of the exhaust is titanium and i wouldn't wrap it.

What year is your R1? Well if you have a aftermarket ypipe with no cat on it, it should be somewhat cooler that way and if you have the stock pipe the cat will make the heat stronger because that's how a cat works. Ex the inside of the cat is ceramic and it heats up and that's how it traps/burns the bad gasses.. I know high performance cars wrap the headers to reduce the heat under the hood and Harley guys do so that they don't burn there leg from the pipe being a inch from their leg. Wrap from my knowledge should do no harm and just lower the temps, but I am not saying you should do it because I don't have experience with it!! I am just saying what I know :crash I have looked at this wrap personally for my 2012

Which I would use to wrap my exhaust if i ever did it, but i would wrap the headers and ypipe, bt not the mufflers.. If I do the wrap i will do the headers back to the cans with one continuous tight wrap, which I think will reduce my heat a truck load and give me a power gain (probably nothing noticeable) because I will get a even heat exchange in the exhaust and cooler temps in the front and under the bikes engine, bt I could be wrong and haven't done it lol just my theory :lhumper: .. One thing though I think it would give the bike a seriously bad ass look for those who would even know what it is if they even notice it lol..:crash

Once again though I am not saying you should do it or you shouldn't do it.. I don't have experience with it on my bike I am just giving my opinion and knowledge of exhaust and wraps and what they do and a link to the best wrap probably out there (in my opinion) :flex: if you do try it before me let me know how it goes if it did anything and pics of how it looks :boobies

I bought the DEI CF wrap and will be wrapping my Y Pipe back to the muffs. I still have way too much heat on my calves even with the Graves 3/4 system.

Edit: ^^^ Exactly what I'll be doing, although our exhausted is a bit less exposed and I'm kinda glad. That's a little too much imo.

Take the wrap off and check holes/rust on your mid pipe. Titanium does a great job keeping heat inside your exhaust. No need to wrap ti. All it really is going to do is create a layer for moister to build up and corrode your pipes.

I have a 02 R1 with a full Akrapovic exhaust, power commander etc.. Just finishing up a full teardown and rebuild.. I went ahead and wrapped the exhaust from the head to the back of the motor and I gotta say it looks awesome,, its too bad you can't see it after the faring is on lol.. A friend of mine is a hot rod builder and he taught me a trick to wrapping headers,, put the wrap in a bucket of water,, wrap the header tight overlapping 1 inch and use stainless steel ties.. When it dries its like a cast on the headers when it shrinks.. I'm really hoping this will keep the heat down.. I'll post pics of the progress tonight..
