Wrecked at my last track day

Well, after doing a whole sh*tload of track days I've finally hit the pavement. It actually happened three weeks ago (June 14th), but this is the first time I've made it to my computer which is conveniently located upstairs. :(
I got pretty lucky considering that I was doing about 90 when I highsided coming out of turn 2 at Carolina Motorsports Park. It was the third session of the day and I was running pretty decent times (for me)....the lap before I wrecked I turned a 1:45.6 which was the fastest I've been around there....apparently that was too fast. I think I just got a little too confident because this was my second track day at CMP and I had probably put about 80 laps on that track before I wrecked.
Turn 2 is a fairly fast, open right hander but you're leaned over pretty good going through there. As I exited the turn my rear tire came out sooo fast. I've slid the rear many times before under power but this was instantaneous. By the time I realized that the rear tire was way out there I was up in the air. This first picture is me going into turn 2.

I went up there once for an Ed Bargy racing school that ended up being rained out. I stayed at that little piece of shit hitel just up the road with that lady that sounded like she was from India or something.

On the seat?? Oh, that's my sony camera. LOL. It got ripped right off the mount.

Here's me holding my knee. I knew something was wrong with it. Well, I got two screws drilled into it this past friday to put my tibia back together. I also broke my left foot in three places. All in all I ended up with four broken bones.

Damn all that and you didnt take the limo ride to the hospital :lol
I dont blame you, from the looks of Kershaw county I would be afraid to go to one of their hospitals too :lol
And not that you mention it that thing on your seat sure does look like a camera dont it :2bitchsla <--me

I was probably most pissed about the rearsets because I had just spend close to $500 on them like a month before that. At least they made it through two full track days before getting torn up.

I ended up going to the ER back at home where they did X-Rays and everything. It seemed to me that the Doc felt I was wasting his time or something because they rushed me in and out of there and said that I was fine. They let me WALK out of the ER. Well I went to my regular doc five days later because I was still in a lot of pain and they x-rayed me again...this time they saw that my left foot was broken and that the top of my right tibia was split in half....then came surgery about a week later. I won't be walking for another month at least...and it's already been three weeks since the accident....man, talk about cabin fever. I want to get OUT and do something!!!

Yeah, I was definitely concerned about what Kershaw's hospital might look like...no offense intended against the good people of Kershaw. I figured I'd go to my regular hospital back home because they would do a better job, but they managed to screw things up too....although, to be fair, I have heard that it's difficult to detect broken bones on x-ray right after it happens if there's a lot of swelling and the bone is not grotesquely broken.

I keep telling myself that it could have been so much worse. I could have broken a lot more bones and I could have torn my bike up much more than I did. All in all, the bike came out pretty good. Frame and swing arm sliders did their job--lots of rashed plastic, but the frame and swing arm have no dents or dings at all. I've still got my stock windscreen and my stock rearsets, so once I'm up and about I'll be riding. And when I get some money put together I'll buy new plastics and make my baby pretty again.

Hey MilleR-R1, did you actually get run into at the track?? Was it under braking or something? Man, that's gotta suck only having the bike for 10 days before getting wrecked through no fault of your own. I'm lucky that I had mine for almost a year and a half and about 8000 miles before I dumped it.

Yeah, we were getting out of a turn, putting the bike up, accelerating hard and this mother fvker just crosses into my line and hits my front wheel. We both go down.
I was o,k., but at least he broke his collar bone :crash

Sorry to hear!! Hope you are ok. Is that your street/track bike ?

They say the track is safer then the street. In some ways I can see that and in others I can't. As far as trees on the side of the road to hit, cars and stuff in the road form time to time, yes. But, you push yourself alot harder on the track and get hurt that way also. Thats just the way I look at it only my point of view. I've done one track day what do I know!!

It was my track and street bike. :( Well, I shouldn't say "was" because it's definitely fixable...but I'm not going to claim insurance on it. It was my fault and I was on a race track. If it had happened on the street I would definitely claim it.

I feel the same way about the track/street thing. Yes there's more obstacles on the street and such, but I don't ever go really fast on the street. I used to think I was going fast on the street until I did my first track day...then I realized that I never did more than maybe 60% out on the street. You definitely push yourself much harder on the track because you know there's no oncoming traffic, there's no gravel or fluids in the turns, and you can really think about your riding and how to improve. My problem is that if I'm gonna go fast, I'm really gonna go for it. I leave myself a safety margin for sure, but much less than out on the street. That all makes it much more likely that you'll go down at some point.

I did learn something though...when your rear tire steps out so far that you can't save it, don't roll out of the throttle like I did. Just stay in the gas and let the bike slide onto its side...that's what I should have done. Lowsiding would have definitely been the better choice. I probably would have been back on the track a couple sessions later if I'd lowsided instead of highsided.

Sorry about your mishap Bob. Hope you heal up soon. Highsides are a pretty hardcore getoff (from what I hear). So I am curious if you are going to claim this on insurance. I have done several track days and wondered what I would do if I binned it. From the pics it doesn't look too bad. Was it rideable afterwards...?

EDIT: I guess I should have read through the entire post...:lol

I went down (a guy hit me!) at the track with my R1 when she had only 10 days.
I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me in November at Thunderhill. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon and someone had already gone down on the first lap of a B group session. They black flagged us and restarted... the trackday organizers had already had an afternoon riders meeting after a rash of crashes and lectured everybody to be careful of cold tires. With the sun off the asphalt and air temps in the low seventies, it can easily take a couple of laps to warm up tires -- and after sitting on a red flag for them to clean up the wreck, then getting black flagged, tires were very cold.

On the restart, a couple of guys were passing everybody, ignoring the cold tire warnings. They were headed into Turn 5, the Cyclone (a steep climb, then a blind right-angle left into an off-camber right sweeper with a 60 foot drop), so I held back a little in case there was carnage I couldn't avoid.

I was just leaning into T4, a semi-tight left, when all of a sudden I see a blur of Kwak green on my left and find myself looking into two panicked eyes. Seems the two guys who were passing everyone had a buddy who was trying to catch up, ignoring the rule against inside passing in the B group at this trackday.

I went as wide as I could, then hit it hard up the hill to give him room... almost made it, too, but he hit the candy stripes on the inside and lowsided, hitting my rear tire and taking me out.

I turned it over to my insurance (GMAC) and they were great abot it... about $4500 in damage (subframe, all plastics, rear wheel, etc.) to the bike, plus they replaced my Arai helmet, gloves and got my rs-Taichi leathers (only their second trackday) repaired. They covered the trackday crash because it was not sanctioned racing or a race practice... the organizers' insurance policy lists them as a motorcycle safety school.

(Check your policy, though... not all will cover trackdays.)

The insurance adjuster also encouraged me to file a claim for injuries... I fractured the tip of my left index finger... but I told them that was pretty chicken $hit and wasn't going to do it.

Turns out the guy who hit me didn't have insurance, anyway... he said he couldn't afford it because his driving record was so bad, so he only rides at trackdays.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! Every day is getting better, and I can't wait to start physical therapy on Monday. I've started driving again which is weird because my car is a manual...oh well, I guess I can practice all the left-foot braking I'll ever need LOL.

BKR1--I was planning on doing both days (I was just going to sign up again Sunday morning), so I figured I'd see ya there. Sorry to hear about your friend--was he the guy that was there with you in March? How bad is his bike? What about the ankle? Is he in a walking cast or is he on crutches? Either way I hope he heals up soon. Doc says it'll be a minimum of 6 months before I'm fully recovered...could be as long as a year. I figure whenever I can go jogging again (I used to go 5-6 times per week) I'll be ready for the next track day. I was hoping that Barber in September would be a possibility, but it doesn't look like it. Don't tell my girlfriend, but I think there's an outside chance to make it back to CMP in November if everything heals well. When is your next track day? How did you do at CMP?
