Yamaha tick not resolved?

So, I have a 2008 R1 with only 10,000 miles. I started hearing that famous tick on my bike. Did what everybody else recommended, I replaced the cam chain tensioner. But, it STILL sounds the same. Bike kind of hesitates to start when I'm on first gear and it sounds horrible!! Shop said it might be the valves. I need to adjust them or could be the chain. Any suggestions before I give in and pay to get my valves adjusted?

Also, anyone in the LBC / Downey area know a good cheap Mechanic or Shop to get this done?*

Thanks!

Sorry if I posted in wrong area. I'm new on here, Thanks for having me.

Before you shell out any money, have you had a listen to other R1's engine noises? My 07 makes rattly noises, as does every other one I've heard.

I'd hate to see you throw good money away chasing an imaginary problem. Clearly there could be a problem and you need to be sure, but don't be surprised if it ends up being standard fair. That's my $0.02

Oh, and welcome! :hellobye

My 07 is the same way, you can tell if the engine is not running right, it will be obvious. If its definitely not running right, , then ya fix it. Little ticks and rattles here and there to me is normal. After all its a gas engine. Lots of good threads on this forum, and a great bunch of guys and girls!
Welcome :boobies

How many miles? Have the valves been checked/adjusted? Have you checked for exhaust leaks? There could be a lot of scenarios where you would here ticking.

Lol!!! Wow! I have been reading a lot about this "Yamaha tick". Why does it do it? And is it normal for it to hesitate on first? My first R1 and I haven't had the chance to listen to other R1s. I haven't checked the clearance since I don't know how and I'm not mechanically savvy. Lol!

what do you mean by hesitate??

what mods do you have?
It won't start right away. I would hit the throttle and start letting go of the clutch and it kind of feels like it bounces before it accelerates properly. It also only does that when I first start it. Once I ride for a while, it doesn't hesitate as much.

No mods on bike. Completely stock.

Sounds pretty normal. That's just a bit of clutch chatter when it's cold.

Also, the sound will change when you pull in the clutch at idle as well. You're changing the tension on moving parts, so things will sound different. I've never owned a bike that 'didn't' do that.

Does it sound like it's coming from where the CCT is located. I'm not very mechanically inclined but somebody should chime in soon. At least you get a bump out of this.

I can't really here a tick in the video.

My bike ticks but I've been told its normally from people that heard it.

Power is good except during take Off on first gear. A little sluggish. Also, tick sounds more When I hold the clutch in. If I put it in neutral with clutch in, It's not that loud. But once I let go of clutch, you Can hear it, even feel it a bit.

Seriously, I stand by my first comment. I think all is probably good. The take off in first gear is always shit, one of the reasons so many opt for -1 front sprocket.

The clutch rattles heaps on almost all of these bikes. What you're describing with the changes when you pull the clutch is inline with the vast majority of owners experiences. People have tried replacing clutch packs, tension springs, baskets etc to correct it but it almost always returns to the same state almost immediately. The springs are still within spec when this occurs.

The top end of the engine is usually noisy too. I know its disconcerting at first but chances are there is nothing wrong. Like said, seek out another bike so you can listen and compare the noises. I watched your video and it was about what I expected but noises are hard to accurately capture and reproduce like that.

I'm in the Whittier and Anaheim area often, I could meet up with you somewhere to listen to the bike and have you listen to mine run? I know I probably need to put in a new cam tensioner on my bike but I've checked the valves myself and know they aren't worn like the infamous valve guide wear tick that yamaha also has.

Probably a bad valve guide. The slow starting is also a sign of this as you probably have air/fuel/compression blowing back into the stacks.

Exactly what my bike did and mine also completely failed at 11k miles. It sounds rumbly because it basically is only running on 3 cylinders. I will bet that if you get the bike nice and hot, 200+, that it runs better and the miss clears up.

Sucks to hear and I can tell you right now you will get zero help from Yamaha. If you have some free time read this:

o I continue to have that tick guys. I took it to a Shop and the Mechanic said my bike is okay. That noise is normal and that he has heard louder R1s. But!!! I do have another issue. The stuttering might be a loosebearing in the clutch case????? Anyone have info on this?

BTW.... second video of bike.

That's not what I'd consider normal. I'd pull the side cover and check the cam chain tension. While you're there, also inspect the guide wear. Its possible that the cam chain is loose and maybe hopped teeth on the sprockets, and now the timing is off. If everything is good there, I'd pull the valve cover, and start checking bucket clearances, and inspecting the cams. I'd also do a leak down test and compression test.
