Just got my first bike. 2003 R1. Want to do a oil change. Has anybody used the mobil 1 4t synthetic? Any good. I kno its alot cheaper than the yamalube. Whats the deal with the wet cluth primary in the mobil oil? The bike doesnt use wet clutch primary? Does it? If not what oil do you use for the clutch gear box? Bikes are all new to me so please dont Knock me for my lack of experience with them. Thanks

Wet clutch primary is Harley term. They have seperate engine oil,

transmission oil and the clutch/primary chain oil.

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 can be used in all 3.

Your R1 uses the same oil for everything.

Just bought my first R1 (2010). About to do my first oil change. Have you guys heard any issues with jumping right to Mobil 1 for the 1st oil change?? Also, a little off topic, but I contacted a little dealer regarding the 1st service interval and was told $260!? For an oil change and to check nuts and bolts?? Have you guys ever had any issues with yours? I'm going from an '03 VFR to my 2010 R1, so the Yamaha is foreign to me. Thanks.

My personal opinion, is that the first service interval is a waste of money, not to get it done by a dealership!! Go around the bike with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything looks good and nothing is loose! I personally haven't ever seen anything come loose at these early stages in a bikes life. You usually do have to tighten the chain up and definitely clean and lube it by this point (600 miles) is what you must be referring to.

And there would be absolutely no problem putting the Mobil 1 oil in the bike right after 600, If you went to ten Yamaha dealerships, You would find that 8 of them use different brand oils for the same bikes! just based on their preference and how cheap they are, they usually throw some crap drum oil in it!!

I recommend using Mobil 1 4t fully synthetic, i have always used it and never had a single minor issue!

Im riding the same bike and these are the steps i have followed, This is only my opinion everyone's is different lolz

Shell Rotella Full Synth (You can get it at Walmart) is a good solution. I think it's 15w40. That or Amsoil. And get lab reports from Blackstone so you know when to change it so you aren't wasting $ or time.

Rotella?... I thought that was for diesels only? Pardon my newbness and though I am an apprentice but don't know jack squat about diesels... What are the advantages of this oil?

I changed the oil recently and I debated btween the two fully synthetic Mobil1 oils: 4T and V Twin 20W50. I chose to use the V-Twin formlation because my 2009R1 runs on the hotter side.

Does anyone else uses the V-Twin formulation?

Great, thanks for the hints. The only thing I've really noticed in the 400 miles I've put on it is the throttle has a little more free play than I'd like. I will check everything out on the bike. And get that oil swapped. Just put my Yoshi's on today and the bike sounds even better!!

thanks for the cooling liquid suggestion Hawk71. I will do so soon!
JRH.... Can you elaborate?

First- is there a good reason to use the Vtwin oil in a R1? Read the bottle of 4T to see why you don't want to...

I used Yamalube on both bikes until the YES warranty ran out and switched to Mobil 1 4T 10w-40 and will stay with it. I do use Yamaha oil filters.

FWIW, I know a guy with a 2004 R1 with over 120,000 miles on it. Guess what is the only oil he's ever used? Yamalube.

You can overanalyze oil to death. Buy oil that is at least as good as what the owner's manual says and change it regularly. You'll be fine.

Ride more, worry less.

Amen, brother. I have a buddy that runs the Yamalube "racing" oil in his R6, I gave him some of my Mobil 4t last month on an oil change, he swore his bike did not run the same or shift the same. The oil debate is like bantering about tires, it is a matter of opinion, run what you like. Change it regularly and have fun.
