The bike is a 04 ZX10R with 1,500 miles on it, the bike was a animal.Parked it one day and the next day right from the start you could tell something was wrong the bike it started to run like crap and got worse and worse you could not even pull a wheel on it, before if you where in 6th doing 40 mph you could get on it and it would take off, now 40 in 3rd and the bike just stumbles and can't get out of it's own way. You could hear the motor sounding like it can't breath or it is being held back (40 miles to a full tank of gas)So we try a few things so we take the exhaust from the servo motor back off to look at the flapper and it appears to be working, so we take it for a ride with the pipe off and the bike is back to normal, we put another pipe on it from another Zx10R and the bike is running great Has anyone ever heard of a muffler going bad? (we did put the orignal one back on and it ran like crap again) If you shake it you don't hear anything moving.

JOE. G

Of the sites i visit daily this is the 1st i've heard of such a prob so perhaps its a very isolated case but as an owner no doubt your concerned as to what the factual prob is, i haven't a clue since you've tested a diff OEM slip-on & removed the effected slip-on and had positive results without it. :dunno

Have you inspected the muffler interior with a flashlight? Maybe someone stuck something in it while it was parked, or maybe even a small animal is stuck inside?
Yeah, a RAT! I smell A RAT!

why ? I love the Zx-10r and Kawi. I'd buy a 10r if I was buying an 04 . I just read everything in his profile and it looks to me like a POSSIBLE trouble maker on this site
No, No what i meant in a J/k way is I wouldn't even make the comments that rubberpants did, as we know i've made a few over the course of a few years that have stirred things up either jokingly or otherwise.

I agree with BD. I frequent a few boards and go down to the local dealer quite often. Never heard of such a problem. I know in my neighborhood I have to keep it covered or else I'll end up :argue with someone elses kid and :machinegu their parents all because they didn't teach their kids to play nice and not break other peoples toys. Hope you find the cause and be sure to post if/when you do.

there is a guy in my area.. who is on his second zx10r..

he had a green one.. he had about 700 miles on it and the frame cracked..

so he took it back to the dealer and they wouldnt do anything cause he had a slip on exhaust on it..

after lots of arguing, he called kawasaki about it.. so they sent a rep to look at it.. they ended up giving him a brand new bike..

so now he has a new blue one...

what we think happened is it was cracked about a foot from the neck of the frame where there motor mounted.. , we are willing to bet that the factory over tightened it and caused alot of stress there and it finanly gave out..

oh well.. i am sure it is not a common problem.. but i would recomend that everybody check theres quite often..

No nothing can crawl int he exhaust or even get stuffed in there, there is a plate or somthing in there you can see that would stop anything from falling in. Dealer is going to cover the pipe cost, or put it toward a aftermarket one.

If I am not completely mistaken, there is also the cat integrated in the muffler. Maybe the cat collapsed.
Juerg the only Cat the system has is located in the muffler / canister! and yes it may have collapsed.
It'll be interesting to see if JOE.G can do a bit of exploring inside of it after the dealer replaces it.

Kawi warrantied but they want the stock one back, there was about or 4 tanks of race fuel run in it.
