Engine was blown back in Oct. on my new05 (1200 mile) bike. Yamaha repaired the engine under the fac. war. with no real problems for me...thank god. I will pick it up next week. Took a while because the crank was in back order. I sure have missed my bike...this is the best time of the year to ride in Florida. Ordered a Corbin seat for it that will be here when I pick up my bike. I am so pumped...just hope all this is behind me. Yamaha will give me 3 more months (while it was in the shop) of factory warranty...just not sure if I should pay for a 3 year extended?

If you plan on keeping the bike it might be worth the extra warranty. I've owned my '03 for almost 3 years now with not the first problem.

3 Months! You are more patient than I am. With that few miles and that long to repair, they could have done more than extend the warrenty.

To answer your Q: yes I would extend the warrenty, that is if I didn't already get rid of it, after waiting that long.

ANOTHER blown R1 motor. It's hard to be brand loyal when I see SO many blown R1 motors. Don't even give me shit that the R1 is the best bike just because we own R1s and this is the R1 forum. I have Kawi, Suzuki, Yamaha...and seriously...I hear this shit all the time about the Yamaha R1..nothing like this about my 636, GSXR.

Did they say why it blew...... just curious.

I dont care if you tell us to give you shit or not....you are gonna hear it from someone with a post like that. Besides, I am sure there are just as many motors that blow of other companies...you just arent hearing about it. Everyone that I know that rides other brands always tell me that Yamaha has the highest build quality. I doubt coming to this forum you are going to hear about all the other brands that blow up. Dont like it, get rid of the bike....wont be our fault you will be riding an uglier, lower quality bike...PEACE :p

Damn killer....chill......

Jspeed,

damn. did i touch a soft spot. no doubt the r1 is beautiful hence why i got one. in my unbiased opinion, the motor could be more reliable. again...my opinion. i more many bikes so i base my opinion on my experience with my other bikes and from my rather large group of riding buddies. don't like my opinion? fine? i respect your opinion that you have the best bike, perhaps the best r1 of the r1 batch. although I may not agree with it. peace

I have had all kinds of bikes and this is the first time I have had a problem like this. I don't think it's because it's a Yamaha, but these things happen to all bikes and it was my turn. Just glad it happened with 6 months left on the warranty. Powerful engines like these are bound to have some problems from time to time...just as long as it's a small %!

1st off sorry about your bike, but I'm glad they are fixing it, and I would look into the extended warranty just in case.

just out of curiosity, how did you break the bike in? I know it has nothing to do with it blowing just curious.

Plus the r1 is the highest revving 1000cc out there not to mention it has 4 more valves than the rest ,also..:rock

really dont see any problems outta mine even throwing plenty of nitrous to it. the Gsxrs has same problem few years back with rod bearings. specially the 750 and some of 1000. of course it was due to wheelies and starving engines. i have seen all the blown engine threads and there have been (i am guessing) about 15-20 with problems reported. Thats not too bad considering how many 1000s of them Yamaha has sold. I know it sucks to those who had it done and had to wait for parts for weeks and months on backorder. Yamaha is kinda infamous for that. but as parts manager at Honda, Suz, Kaw, Yamaha, Ktm delaership i have seen all of them with parts backorder problem. KTM being worse. But yamaha will go to many lengths to fix problems. i had guy out of town riding cross country on Road star. he had bike serviced at his dealership before he left and they forgot to put oil in his transmission case. he made it 1000s of miles before the chain finally wore smooth out. The part was on backorder... he was stuck, but yamaha parts guys went and found a chain off one of there R&D bikes and sent it overnight with other parts FREE of charge. told the Guy even tho it wasnt there fault they would take care of it. i have never had any of other manufacturers do this for any of my customers. and im not saying that yamaha is King or anything like that as it doesnt always work like this for everyone. my hats off to those who have had problem and still find trust in them. i do recommend the warranty tho. best insurance that you can get.

Yeah, I see your point but I havent heard anything about other motors blowing mainly because this is the only site/forum that I visit. At least Yamaha is fixing the problem, however from what I hear they could be a little better about having parts available. I know all the dealerships in town pretty well that sell Yamaha's and none of them here have had any come back with problems with a blown motor. But there are many factors that arent going into what people say about the motor....and I highly doubt anyone that was beating the snot out of the bike is going to own up to they probably nuked it early on, and people that say they blew up early I doubt they are going to say they broke it in correctly either.....to many variables to go in to what cause the engine to blow.:thumbup
