I've been having an issue with the new lady and I wanted to see what you vets think the problem may be.

The other week I was riding home from campus when the R1 started shutting off randomly... it seemed to happen most often at stops... There is no error message and the HUD still has power. It is acting almost as if I am hitting the kill switch. I thought that it might have been a loose kickstand sensor or something minor of that nature, but then it started happening at stop lights, while I was in neutral after a minute or two of being idle.

On that same ride home, whilst on the freeway at a steady 75mph with a steady throttle input... the bike lurchs forward as if I have rolled off of the throttle... it struggles for a second or two and the power comes back on as it was before.

At first I thought it may just be dirty injectors, but then later moved my suspicion to the fuel pump. I do have a scorpio alarm system on the bike with the "kill fuel pump" option on it. I am definitely not pushing the series of buttons required to do this while I am riding. And the bike ran beautifully for the 3 weeks that I have owned it, and I knew the previous owner (a close personal friend of mine) and he never had a problem for several months that the alarm was installed.

I've been riding SS's for a few years now, so Im pretty sure Im not making some noob mistake that causes this...pretty sure :p

Any ideas are welcomed.

So apparently the recall wasn't done by the previous owner, so Yamaha will be getting a call from me tomorrow.... would be nice if this was the solution... a free one :p

Thanks a lot fellas.

Update:

Took it to the dealer... according to Yamaha the TPS recall is not necessary on my bike.. * sigh * Now I get to pay the dealer out the wazoo to figure out what the hell the problem is.

Are you saying that I do need it, and they are yanking me?

Is there any way that I can call yamaha myself and check on the TPS with the VIN?

yes. they can check it with vin.. there is list of serial #s that need to be replaced.. just call another dealer.. if not.. worst case.. but new TPS and install it. that sounds like ur problem for sure

the symptoms you are describing point to a faulty tps & there was a recall for that so the dealer telling you that isn't the problem when you already verified that it hasn't been replaced sounds to me like they don't know what they are talking about.

if its the classic TPS issue, when you restart it after the bike dies, it will run like a dog and will not idle properly unless you turn it off at the key then restart it. ie: instead of restarting immediately after it dies, turn ignition off with the key then back on before restarting.

soooo... i got the r1 back today... apparently the guy before me didn't do the best job wiring something.... the scorpio alarm... and there was a lose ground bouncing around in there that was shutting off the bike.

Dealer fixed it up, washed the bike, and called me. Hehe, funny that it sounded exactly like a TPS Failure.... I almost got in an argument with the manager about giving me the damn recall... but apparently my specific R1 didn't get a faulty one... I'm going to call around anyway to be sure.

that may be, but seeing as I didn't pay anything... it seems less likely... nit impossible, but less likely that they did it without telling me.
