To do iridum or not to do that is the question? Also plug gaping & indexing and shav

I have a 2000 R1 I am trying to chose if I should go iridum or not. I need cold hard facts why or why not...lets have them people.

I want to know pros & cons.... Dyno results whould be awsome too. Also lets talk about plug gaps also.

Please when you comment on the plugs say if you are stock or not also.

Has anyone shaved plugs and index them? also if so tell the pros & cons.

I dont use iridium for price of them. you wont find dyno chart to compare..as they dont make any difference..or its so small that you cant see it on dyno pull. each dyno pull can vary 1-4 hp. can it be plugs, fuel?? bikes wont pull exact same # on dyno. personally i run cr9e single electrode plugs gapped at .023. instead of duel electrode cr9ek that come stock. some people may swear by iridium plugs, but if your not getting in more fuel or more air, or its not getting burned completely, you cant make more power. but im sure there are guys that swear by them. maybe they last longer or give little better fuel mileage.

Prompted by your post I headed over to the NGK site.

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/spark_plugs/installation.asp?nav=31300&country=US

Indexing yields at best 1% increase.

Smaller tip requires lower voltage and they supposedly last longer.

Plugs are not pregapped and should be gapped to spec.

I guess the biggest difference over stock is the small price increase.

If you are looking for more BHP its not spark plugs :thumbup

small increase Will?? how much are plugs. i cant remember(tho i was parts Mgr for many years). i know cr9e are like $2-3, the cr9ek at like $6-8, and i thought iridium were like $10-16.. course thats here in US. what are prices over water Wiliam?

Iridiums are about ÂŁ30 for four (Ebay). I personally didn't think that was terrible, so I didn't bother to ask Mr Yamaha for the price of four stock plugs.

EDIT - Quick UK Google ÂŁ22 stock NGK for '98 R1.

thats about right then. never thought of looking on ebay for plugs. i just buy a box of them and use them over time. never been fan of expensive plugs. firm believer in NGK cr9e..hell its same plug i run in turbo busa, so it must work okay. the other plugs are too hard to gap for turbo. on turbo gap needs to be about .016-.018. or turbo will literally blow flame out at higher boost levels.

So nobody has any secret race plugs or anything like that i ask this because i have a RX-7 and if i use the plugs that are for the honda 250R motors it will run about 3 to 4 tenths quicker in the quarter mile...these are the things i want to know. CMON give up the secrets all you tight lips :)

there is not secret plug for R1 or any other motorycle that will get you those types of gains in 1/4 mile. if there was i would have used it by now. i wish there was!

use the CR9EK plugs. they will increase compressin a bit ( a very small amount, but every little bit helps) and the resist fouling better than the stock plugs.

Either way the R1 has a very slow buring head. Lighting the mixture is not the problem, it's getting to to travel across it's wide flat combustion chamber that's difficult.

I run iridium in my YZ426 and have never fouled a plug. Fouling plugs is not a concern on the R1, but it is my understanding that iridium plugs have a lower voltage requirement. As such, are not as demanding on the electrical system. Seems to make sense to me and worth the extra money given the fact that many R1 models are plagued with electrical issues (i.e. stator, regulator/rectifier).

Within the 38k miles on my bike I've changed the plugs 4 times....and none never needed it but I felt better checking, replacing , new gasket etc.

I used NGK, Denso iridium and no iridium and never could tell any difference reading or riding them.

Was running NGK Iridiums in my 99 R1, and I have noticed since the change to Brisk High Performance Race plugs (Brisk havent got a Gap as they have no shoulder on the plug), the bike seems more responsive, It was a hard one to call as I was running normal "real" oil, and went to fully synthetic oil and replaced standard filter with a hi flow filter, as well as the plug change in same service. Was only 2 things that were done but i noticed a difference in ridding it.
