Bugger... Also have to take the shock linkage mount and fixing hardware into consideration!

:lol I love it!
All though your goal is to reduce some weight by going carbon, even if it turns out that you are a little over budget I think the overall package and finished item will far outweigh ( no pun intended ) a few extra grams by looks and bling factor alone.

And if your looking every gm you can find you could always de fur it, that must save you half a kilo. :crash

Blaspheme! Blaspheme! :hammer:

:lol

Well I'm working on some cunning slots right now that I hope Paul can incorporate into the underside of the arm so they're hidden.

By the way, I can't use holes all the way through the side faces of the pivot section, there's too many other factors and features to make holes look good and be structurally safe. The chain runner runs across most of the left face too... I didn't initially think of that.

What Paul and I have come up with is very cool though, he had a great idea of a recess in the right side that will look mega. Shouldn't be very long before I'll post up where I'm currently at with it ;)

Weight of carbon section - 2.3kg

Weight of standard 98-01 'arm - 5.2kg
Weight of standard 02-03 'arm - 5.5kg

That leaves me a maximum of 3.2kg to play with, ideally 2.90kg before I gain weight with this arm.

Trouble is, Dymag used a cast piece for their front section, which is undoubtedly hollow and a relatively low density alloy. I've just done a mass check (Solidworks has a very cool function where you can calculate the mass of a part as long as it knows what material/density it's made from) and because my front section is going to made from billet alloy, that's naturally heavier than a 'cheap' cast alloy...

Thankfully, the light portion of the 'arm will be the part that moves the most, not the pivot section but right now I'm just working on trying to get some weight off with a few cunning lightening slots here and there. Paul's gonna love me! :crash

As long as I don't gain any overall weight, I gain the most incredible piece of overall engineering I'll have ever seen on an R1 so I'll be as happy as can be. But my hopes of losing some overall weight are looking slim right now.

I always thought the swingarm got lighter on the 02

Did you weigh these yourself ?

just had a thought about the weight of the arm, I wonder if moving most of the mass forwards will make any difference to the way the suspension works ?

Bit like mass centralisation innit
Yep, the mass of the swinger is most definitely moved forward now.

I've got the weight of the front section down to what Solidworks reckons will be just over 2.8kg. I've just emailed you the model actually ;) Deep breath!!

From what I've read, the centralization of the weight will have a greater net affect than the reduction of weight.

You guys seem to be tracking to me :thumbup
:lol It's half wishful thinking on my part Dan ;)

The man who can has just sugegsted I try some fancy cuts to lose a few more grams, so watch this space :secret:

Just got around to reading the entire thread Mark, It was a great read, The work you have done is inspiring. And the craftmanship top class. I look forward to seeing the finished project.
Thanks mate, glad you like it. Can't wait to see it finished myself!

Paul's work has been incredible. The front section is going to be unbelievable ;)

Well, the result of some crazy amount of work getting my head around lots, and lots, and lots of things, giving Paul earache with all my constant emails asking if this is okay, is that do-able etc., and some last minute advice from Bob on how to do the cool cutouts and preserve the bearing tube...

Solidworks reckons 2.67kg for the part now :sneaky

Insanely trick.

Forgive me if I missed it, but is the spindle tube going to be formed from the same piece as the rest of it?

If so, wouldn't it be significantly stronger to fill those 2 middle sections and have that connected to the spindle tube as well?

I know weight is a concern, but those 3 connection points opposed to one solid connection point has me nervous....There may very well be no weight to my concerns...but can you explain this to me to put my mind at ease?

Yep, that entire part is one piece billet.

Basically, the short version of the answer is that will be strong enough. It's connected to the pivot tube by quite a significant are over those three sections. It's probably difficult to get an idea of scale from that crappy picture and the extra crappy animation but those connections and the walls are some chunky mofo's ;)

I'm more than happy that there's going to be immense strength in that part. All of it.

Glad you asked though, the whole project is something I've wanted to make people think when they see it. I think I may be adding "Surely that swingarm's never going to take the weight/force without breaking" to the "What happens when it gets wet?" question I get asked about my bike a lot :lol
