Went from 47 to 45 on the rear. Big difference in axle position for just 2 teeth.

When I bought the bike it had -1 +2 which to me was ridiculous gearing
as far as rpm on the highway. First thing I did was put a 17 back on.

Now I did the rear so all stock again.

Well for me it was a matter of even just +2 in the rear is to short for
my bike with the power it's making now.

I took it to a road out west where we test top end and it ran through
6th gear like 4th & 5th, fast right to red line.

I'll try & check it again this weekend with the stock gearing.

New Drive Systems sprocket.

What gearing are you running Ian?

I have always run taller then stock gearing on my bikes, mostly beacuse in
the past they all had motor work and needed it.

Now my R1 has the same mods as you motorwise but I find myself looking
for another gear on the highway with the 47. It was real bad with 16/47.

I thought I was on a 600 with the way the motor was screaming.

I'm running -1/+1. I gained about 600rpm at 70 mph
how do you like the -1/+1. I've been indecisive about what I wanna go with when i go 520. right now im -1 in front stock rear. Its got better take off and acceleration. im leanin towards -1/+1 just cause I ride daily back and forth to work and dont want the revs too high

-1 +2 is too much for a 1000 on the street.....

I run +1 in the rear on my 07 R1, just offsets a 55 rear tire instead of the stock 50 tire.....

on my track R6, I am running -1 +2 in the rear, and it is a bit much, but good advantage on the 6 on most tracks driving out of corners.....

thanks man. a buddy of mine with an 09 has the -1/+2 but i hate asking to ride other folks bikes haha. maybe ill just do the -1/+1 and if i dont like it i can buy a new sprocket with stock gearing.

-1 tooth in the front sprocket is equal to going up 2.77 teeth in the rear sprocket :fact

most people should either go -1 in the front, or u+2 or +3 in the rear, anything beyond that and on the highway you will be revving noticeably higher....but some people like -1 +2, its probably more polpular on a 600/750 than on a 1000, but is done...

The -1 front was all I needed any more than that and I think it would be too much.
yeah I like -1 as it is now...but you know how it is....its always about finding something that makes it just a little bit quicker... :lol

gear it too short and its gonna be a bitch to keep the front end down on most gears :D

Yamaha knows what they're doing and they're not de-gearing their bike. Unless your a wheelie freak or a club racer, specifically gearing for the mostly short tracks we go to, Yamaha has done the business. More often it's managing your engine output and putting that thing in the power where it wants to be. If your shifting any gear before 8K and some not as early as that, then it's not gear ratio your looking for. It's riding ability where the power starts to get scary. And as far as performance work, the work will make that stock gearing even more significant. Everyone rides a little differently and the purpose of the ride can be the difference too. But basically the bike was originally designed to be a road racer and for that purpose the R&D Yamaha has done is quality. Now if your drag racing...
