After a long wait, finally went to my first trackday on my R, first session was SLOW....second session went better, finding my lines and markers.

Was running 2nd and this new ZX came flying past but looked very uncomfortable in the turns. Few corners later he went ploughing..

Rode past and thought ok pit it in and gather your thoughts, second last corner i had what seems on the video to be too much lean and lost the front....sliding onto the grass rolling the bike over me....

Bobnins, nose fairing and speedo bracket faaarked, lights still fine and clocks too.

Must say i did not enjoy the handling of the R, compared to my 05 ZX10.
Trying to upload video on utube now...

Original equipment (stock)

No front is maxxis and rear pilot road 3.
Front was 2.1 and rear 1.9
Get some good track proven tires, those are crap for track use. Glad your ok, sucks you learned the hard way that tires are everything on track. Get some Q2's they are great on street and track IMO, they warmup fast w/good handling characteristics and plenty of grip.

Sounds like a factor of things lead to your demise.

Has the suspension been set up for you? It's not often you hear someone who doesn't like the handling of the r1.

Glad you're ok though

that wont make up for what clearly seems like a rider problem. he got in over his head and lost the front, i doubt a Q2 would help much more. while its not a bad idea to get a nice hypersport tire, lets not step away from the fact that he needs to calm down and enjoy the track day for what it is. speed will come when BP and lines fall into place.

hate to sound harsh but i made the same mistakes and it put me on my ass twice, just hate to see others do the same. op either way welcome to the addiction, its the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

While I do agree with what you're saying, would you recommend the tires he used ? He made a few mistakes and has admitted to them, the first mistake was using the tires he chose IMO.

Bad call on the tires. First using touring tires at a track day. Seen it done before successfully, but it is simply the wrong equipment. Second, is using different make of tires on front/rear, they have different profiles that can cause stability issues. Doing it on the street is one thing if you aren't railing it, but on the track it should be plainly obvious as a nono. Did the techs say anything about that? They should have.

while they arent the first set of tires i would recommend that was his last mistake he made. ive run take offs pretty much shot or well towards the end of their life with no problems. the only times ive had problems were both my fault, i was on power pures and i had felt the front end push and kept trying to keep up at the pace i was going...lost the front. second time it was a bit cooler and i was on R10s and i lost the front end in a turn just tipping in too aggressive for the conditions. what im getting at is two different types of tires and both times the error was on me.

in the end the most important part is the OP is ok aside from a little hurt pride but that can quickly be restored back out on the track :flex: the best advice i got was to take what i learned from the wrecks and make a positive change so to reduce the risk of it happening again.

+1, tires are typically made to be a set when it comes to bikes. Don't get me wrong, that was the least of your issues. But rare will it be that you mix compounds and profiles and make the bike more predictable.
