Hello, recently I just had a problem with my 2015 yamaha R1 at 120mph something in the engine burst, I was investigating and I did not know that it had a recall, the previous owner let me know that the recall had been done in the dealer in 2016 with 0 miles before he bought it, he used it until November 2021 and sold it to me with less than 4,000 miles, I used it for 4 months and got 2,000 miles and that happened to me, someone from this forum could Help How can I solve this problem? Thanks

you can go into a dealer with the vin and they will be able to check if the recall was done. when you say burst what do you mean? the recall was that the gears had metal cut from the middle to reduce weight and i assume weren't heat treated properly and in very rare cases under extreme driving they could crack the second gear. i think they replaced multiple gears in the recall to be safe and cover themselves. more info would help identify your issue or give you a direction

Definitely this was what happened to me, of course I felt an explosion and managed to control the motorcycle until I stopped, when I got off the motorcycle the chain had broken, all the oil had been released and a hole was also opened in the engine, until it A rocker arm came out of the crankshaft, so the important thing is to find out if the recall was carried out or not, right?

Yea that will be a wierd one the recall should have been done and if it wasn't then what would Yamaha do because the recall has been known a out for 7 years now would they be obligated to cover your bike? You have photos of the damage? Where was the hole?

I agree - I can't see Yamaha paying for that if the recall wasn't done. Short of repo'ing every bike, they can't force people to bring it in for the service. Maybe you could go after the previous owner for saying the recall was done. That being said, if you blew a hole in your case I'm more inclined to think you broke a connecting rod or something big like that.

I'd love to see pics.

I have photos, the hole is in the front part of the engine, how can I get them to you?

But how is a connecting rod or piston going to break on a motorcycle with less than 6,000 miles, at 120 mph?

How can I send you the photos?

Owners of 2015-2016 (silver case) models were having problems with what is explained in the video below years back:

Quick summation: In 2017 + (black casing motors) Yamaha added shims to the crankshaft to lessen float/movement that eventually leads to catastrophic failure in contact with the balance shaft. Hope this isn't the case.... pun ?

I'm not sure where I stand in this to be honest. Racing teams never mentioned this failure, but you can take that however you please. Plus there are some hard-core track guys on this site that beat the heck out of their silver casing motors...

they added the thrust washer in 2016 so it isn't a silver case think its a 2015 case thing and it was very few

Did you ever get this problem resolved. Similar thing has happened to me and I’m curious how much you had to spend.

The previous owner said he ran it out of gas and since then it doesn't have the smoothest idle and it also a little jerky when cruising at a steady speed. I was thinking maybe when he ran it out if gas it sucked a bunch of crap from the bottom of the tank into the fuel filter.. Well I don't think these things have fuel filters:( Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this issue if its not the fuel filter?
I had a jerky ride now and then, today I removed the tank, the fuel pump has some clips that stop you removing it from the tank. I cut them off as they serve no purpose. Take base off the bottom of the fuel pump, there is a bag filter it was blocked on mine. I ordered a new one. There are loads of vids on this. My bike was well dangerous with that fuel starve then on again, you can just clean the shit off the bag tho.
