Whenever I start out in first and let the clutch out to take off the bike chatters and makes a clunking noise has anyone else had this problem?
Once I accelerate it goes away...

It sounded more like the clutch grinding to me... & funny things about it is that it only happens when u throttle hard within initial biting point lasting about a sec or two...r1-superstar said:Does it sound like lugging the engine?
Nah...SMPLMN said:How much wear on the oil? My 01 will do this if the oil is too hot or old. More like a slipping feeling. Its like the commercial says...viscosity breakdown.
Then again, could be a bad tranny design....j/k![]()
Damn, talking about throwing money down the drain.ctk1 said:I changed my oil at 300 miles, 800 miles, 1,200 miles.
Bike has 1,235 now.
Nothing strange happend with the bike, I broke it in according the MotoMan method (after 15 miles nail full throttle), it runs 319 km/h (198 mph) on the speedo at redline, doesn't use any oil and performs well on the Dyno at 156 SAE rearwheel hp.ctk1 said:Whenever I start out in first and let the clutch out to take off the bike chatters and makes a clunking noise has anyone else had this problem?

The only thing I read on the Motor-Forum.nl is this, when you break-in the bike 'like a grandma' the clutch CAN stick and the gearbox CAN be rough to shift, after the first (600 mile) inspection the 'problem' is gone because of the newly filled oil.
So it is better to brake-in the bike more aggresive and change the first oil after 50 miles or so.
It was off course 198 mph, I'll edit my post, the rest is ok. The only limitation is the speedometer, in Europe 299 km/h (186 mph). It will hit this figure in 5th, 6th does the rest till 198 mph.r1-superstar said:298 MPH? I know you meant less. Way less, like 184 MPH (speed it's limited to.)
However, I agree with what you are saying about the clutch. I stated the same thing in my post above.

This is bullshit! Maybe you saw the bike as it came out of the box, you would noticed plenty chaingrease on the swingarm with 0 miles on the odometer!? This means - I saw it on tape (visit at the factory) - that the bike is already doing 10.000+ rpm in the factory...COLD...BladeR1 said:I broke my 02 R1 in using the motoman method and she was strong as a bull. However, the 04 is a totally different animal. I asked my mechanic about the motoman method and he just shook his head. He said to do it by the book because these new litre bikes have such incredible tolerances...read tighter than a &*)*( at a )(*)*)#$%#![]()
You can have bad luck with EVERY bike, I had a Fireblade (CBR929RR), after 7,000 miles the gearbox exploded (3 sprockets, 1 fork and the drum) and after 12,500 miles a few bigends blow away so the engine had to be removed twice in just 12,500 miles!rubberpants said:Maybe its this problem read from another board:

"Just got home from my dealership where they had an 04 R1 motor spread all across a workbench. It would seem that at 620 miles second gear sprocket let go. There was pieces of sprocket everywhere, and it blew a hole in the lower crankcase. It was really ugly. All sorts of crap in the oil pickup. So now I'm really glad I stuck with Kawasaki. I bet all the boys riding R1's and reading this forum will be hearing every strange noise coming from those bikes and cringing as they grab the clutch. It will be interesting to see how Yamaha handles this claim. I will try to keep up with this story. While I was there they had a blue R1 just prepped that I sat on. The mechanics told me to be careful not to break it."
