Whenever I start out in first and let the clutch out to take off the bike chatters and makes a clunking noise has anyone else had this problem?
Once I accelerate it goes away...

Crap!

How much wear on the oil? My 01 will do this if the oil is too hot or old. More like a slipping feeling. Its like the commercial says...viscosity breakdown.

Then again, could be a bad tranny design....j/k :)

Nah...
Not actually a problem.... it just cause a funny sound thats all...
It works perfectly fine, btw it occurs b4 & after oil changes....
I'm kind of getting used to it already... I tell myself that it is just adjusting itself for the clutch to bite into place thats all...

Nothing strange happend with the bike, I broke it in according the MotoMan method (after 15 miles nail full throttle), it runs 319 km/h (198 mph) on the speedo at redline, doesn't use any oil and performs well on the Dyno at 156 SAE rearwheel hp.

The only thing I read on the Motor-Forum.nl is this, when you break-in the bike 'like a grandma' the clutch CAN stick and the gearbox CAN be rough to shift, after the first (600 mile) inspection the 'problem' is gone because of the newly filled oil.

So it is better to brake-in the bike more aggresive and change the first oil after 50 miles or so.

ahhh, the reason i dont buy used!!! lmao!! ya foolz... why is it so many ppl just dont give a rats arse about taking care of such amazing toy.s

i dont get it... break in is what makes your baby shine!! specially on an R1 that loves to scream and stretch her sexy legs out!!!

I broke my 02 R1 in using the motoman method and she was strong as a bull. However, the 04 is a totally different animal. I asked my mechanic about the motoman method and he just shook his head. He said to do it by the book because these new litre bikes have such incredible tolerances...read tighter than a &*)*( at a )(*)*)#$%# :D

298 MPH? I know you meant less. Way less, like 184 MPH (speed it's limited to.)

However, I agree with what you are saying about the clutch. I stated the same thing in my post above.

Sounds like the clutch may have some "glazing" on it. They can get pretty grabby if this is the case.

Maybe its this problem read from another board:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Just got home from my dealership where they had an 04 R1 motor spread all across a workbench. It would seem that at 620 miles second gear sprocket let go. There was pieces of sprocket everywhere, and it blew a hole in the lower crankcase. It was really ugly. All sorts of crap in the oil pickup. So now I'm really glad I stuck with Kawasaki. I bet all the boys riding R1's and reading this forum will be hearing every strange noise coming from those bikes and cringing as they grab the clutch. It will be interesting to see how Yamaha handles this claim. I will try to keep up with this story. While I was there they had a blue R1 just prepped that I sat on. The mechanics told me to be careful not to break it."

It was off course 198 mph, I'll edit my post, the rest is ok. The only limitation is the speedometer, in Europe 299 km/h (186 mph). It will hit this figure in 5th, 6th does the rest till 198 mph.

Ahh, that explains why so many Americans on here doubt the top speed. I am refering to another thread where some guy got totaly jumped on when he claimed he went over 189mph (i forget the thread) and i chimed in and said he could be telling the truth because i hit 198mph when the bike was up on a stand :thumbup

This is bullshit! Maybe you saw the bike as it came out of the box, you would noticed plenty chaingrease on the swingarm with 0 miles on the odometer!? This means - I saw it on tape (visit at the factory) - that the bike is already doing 10.000+ rpm in the factory...COLD...

There is no problem with tight tolerances. One thing is véry important though, give it a gentle warmup, normally it takes about 10 miles before the oil is really at 100 degrees Celcius (212 F) operating temperature, a very high value!

You can have bad luck with EVERY bike, I had a Fireblade (CBR929RR), after 7,000 miles the gearbox exploded (3 sprockets, 1 fork and the drum) and after 12,500 miles a few bigends blow away so the engine had to be removed twice in just 12,500 miles!

Motorrad magazine had big problems with their Kawasaki ZX-12R, so they had to order a new one for the test.

Yamaha will cover this problem, no point!

My '02 started to do the exact same thing. . .in first gear only and only when leaving from a complete stop. . .upon acceleration it goes away and the bike runs super smooth.

I don't think it's the oil. . .I use Motul 300V or the next one down (I think it's 5100 or something like that) depending on availability and funds in the wallet but always full synthetic (oil change before this last one I used Silkolen full synthetic because they were out of Motul).

I don't think it's any transmission gears with broken teeht or else it wouldn't go away upon acceleration. . .it would probably get worse and would probably tear the transmssiion to pieces to boot!!!

Has anybody figured out what this noise is. . .next oil change I'm getting a new clutch case cover gasket and I'm pulling the case cover to inspect the clutch plates and replace if necessary. . .bike only has about 17,000 miles on it right now. . .should be good for a LOT longer than that!!!

Whenever I start out in first and let the clutch out to take off the bike chatters and makes a clunking noise has anyone else had this problem?
