I recently purchased a 2007 R1 from a friend. It has 15,900 miles on it. I had it idling in my garage when I realized that it was running hot. The temp got up to 215-220 before the fans kicked on. I was worried about the engine getting damaged so, I cut the bike off. I have seen some posts from people with this issue.

I will need to visually inspect some of the cooling system components to make sure there isn't a problem with the hoses, thermostat or expansion tank. FYI: this will be my first time working on a motorcycle.

what common failures does this bike's cooling system have. I'll check those first.

Does anyone know if there is any aftermarket thermostat that will fit the R1 and engage/open at a lower temp?

Is there a guide to tap into the fan wiring and install a fan over ride? I want to have a switch/button I can use when I want the fans on.

any other suggestions?

Thanks for the info. I searched and found a Fan MOD DIY that shows how to install a switch on the bike. I will look into doing a flash tune for the bike in the near future. I would rather flash tune than install a switch and wiring.

The bike has a small foot print so, I have to be selective on what goes in it. I think I want to install a USB kit in the rear seat cowl and maybe H.I.Ds in the headlights.

The 30 degree difference is not that large of a gap. Why would Yamaha design the cooling system this way. I will take it out tomorrow and see if it goes past that. I checked my fluids today and topped off the coolant/oil.

your bikes fine, i used to think mine got hot but they just run hot. likes whats already been said cruising around will be 200F and when you stop at a light temps will quickly rise to 223F when i believe the fans kick on. real hot days riding hard my bike will stay +200f but never gets over 230f.

Question is: will running water wetter for a long time hurt anything, i like it best bc my bike seems to run the coolest on it but was wondering if i needed something with better lubrication properties for my water pump or whatever? (Not worried about freezing ofcourse as i just bring my bike inside)

Water Wetter and distilled helped on mine, and removing the cat and switching to race baffles in the stock cans. My R1 never gets above 220°F now and that is only when I am in traffic in summer. The fans bring it right back down to below 200°F pretty quick. When the bike is moving the temp hovers around 180°F when it is hot out.

My bike hit 244 right after I pulled up to my garage. I turned off the engine then saw the red light come on. I let the fans go until it cooled off abbot. This was after riding from work to home (only 10 miles). I didn't have a problem while I was on the road.

I forgot to say this....Should I be worried or is it just a coincidence since I just turned off my engine.

I don't think it's anything to worry about. What was the outdoor temp that day and were you in traffic on the way close to home.

After you turn the bike off because the engine is not running you are no longer circulating the coolant through the radiator therefore running the fans will not aid in cooling off the engine any faster, all it does is discharge and weaken the battery when you start the bike next time you ride. Letting a battery sit in a discharged state (low voltage) will cause the positive plates to sulfate and corrode the positive plate grids shortening the life of the battery.

Mine has seen 248 but rarely ever goes there. Usually it gets to 230 and then the fan cools it down. Ambient temp was around 86.
On track it hovers around 212.

My 08 runs hotter than my 03 - that bike only went over 222 once in the 2 years that I owned it.

My 08 has 2bros with a link pipe (cat delete). I don't notice the heat on track but on the road at a relaxed pace, it's a bit more apparent. My eggs are not boiling yet

I think as far as heat goes street riding is worse than track mainly because on the track, even though you're constantly reving the piss out of the bike, your always moving at a good pace where as street riding there's a lot of stop and go so there's no airflow through the radiator at times. I think the flash is a good idea but you can always go the cheap route like I did and install a manual on and off switch for a few dollars.

My 02 was the coolest running bike I've owned I used engine ice and while riding stayed in the 160s. But when in traffic 2 or more lights got me to the 220 fans kicking on. So I figured all this talk of the 04/06&07/08 heat I'd better run the same engine ice in my 04. Well it runs in the upper 160s / mid 170s and when I hit a light it goes up fast to its 220. But the fans knock it right down quickly and it never goes above 221. And it still has the full stock exhaust. I'm all about keeping my radiator clean and fresh fluids every year too. Mine is very low mileage so ain't had to clean the radiator fins yet but still did fresh engine ice. I'm expecting it to possibly run a tad cooler once I throw my exhaust on. I've always tried to do some kind of cool down run before I shut it down if it's up in the 200s which can be tough in the suburbs. Lol

What about performance wise?? How much does a flash do for a 04/06 R1. I plan to have Ivans performance do mine which requires a pc3 or 5 as well so I already picked up a pc3. Check out his webpage it looks like it may add to midrange quiet a bit.

There is some very simple science here. The R1 has only a few litres of coolant, the radiator sits shrouded in the fairing just in front of the headers, and the engine can make a lot of power. So if you've been blasting through traffic and stop for a red, there's all of this heat energy with nowhere to go.

It doesn't matter which coolant you use, the radiator won't work until the fans come on.

I have a 07 and my fans kick on at 223 it will go up to 230 then drop. all of this is normal.
