08 R1 VS 09 R1 - Pros & Cons???

Hi there! I'm new to this forum and registered my self due to interesst in purchasing R1.

My questions is...

How many problems are outthere for the 2008 R1? I've heard of 2nd gear shift problem, engine heat, stalling, steering stem etc.

But, every article I read I just can't verify if it is a 2008 model or not. The articles I've found simply doesn't state model year. So is these problems really related to the 2008 model? If so, is there any permanent solutions to them? Other words, is it worth buying one brand new and not waste alot of money for on the repair?

Second question is...

Any experience with the new R1 2009? Or is it still to new to know anything?
I've heard that the engine is really good, but again due to the cross plane design the stress on other parts are greater thus resulting in a decreased life span of the engine.

But how much is "decreased" life span really? Some people say it is STILL LONGER than forexample KTM RC8's V2 Twin engine. Well if that "shorter lifespan" is still longer than a V-Twin then I guess it is not a big deal. But again is this just speculative conclusions or does it have any "proofs"?

Again, is this R1 2009 worht buying?

And last questions...

Say both the 2008 and 2009 is a good purchase and both reliable and durable machines that can take some long trip travels and punishments, which one is the best in terms of reliability, durability, longevity, low maintenance etc. when we talk about 2008 and 2009 versions?

--

I have been looking, and looking and looking and almost every literbike I find has some troubles. CBR1000RR has the oil burning issues, KTM RC8 has bad gearbox and alot of engine heat, R1 has stalling, engine heat, and 2nd gear shifting problems, etc. So what I'm trying to find out is trying to buy the one with least problems most reliable with the coolest design.

Suzuki and Kawasaki has no interesst. I just don't like them, personal taste, so I'm not attacking suzuki and kawa owners :)

Hope someone has some inputs! And sorry for my bad english, I did my best, hope you get the idea of what I'm trying ot say :)

Never heard of any issues with second gear, stalling or headstock bearings on the 08. Why don't you read around on the forum. Don't be naive and think you are the only one to ask a question here....

any bike can have potential flaws but that is not an example of the whole product in general. just that one production line that day may have got a bad set up. if you do the research there is always something that someone is complaining about. but there are warrantys to address these issues if any. a lot of the bikes life depends on the owner. i think the 2009 R1 should be just as reliable as the other R1 models. i dont think yamaha would introduce that new technology if it took away from the engine life. you will drive yourself crazy trying to figure out these type of details. you just gotta get which ever one you like and thats it. there is always a potenital error. a good example is i purchased a 2006 350z back in 2006. well @21k the engine blew up.long story short. the engine was replaced and the new engine worked fine. due to that happening, i did not make a generalization that all 350z had bad engines, i just happen to get a bad one. its the same with bikes. there will always be a potential issue. i have not had an R1 since my 2003. i have had gixxer 1000's since then. but i did not have any issues with my 03 R1 or gixxer 1000's. all purchased brand new. good luck.

Well thank you for your inputs! :)

However, what I'm looking for is not a specific error/problem that occur here and there to a MC, because I know that every manufacture will have a "bad day".

What I'm trying say is, isthere any "typical" known issues related to R1 2008/2009?

Forexample, the new CBR1000RR 2008 is known for its oil burning issue, although its not every single one of them only around 25% it is still a "common"/"typical" issue related to this particular model.

So, is there any "typical" "common" issues related to R1 2008/2009 that I should be aware of before buying?

I hope you get my point, because I'm not looking for a bike brand that doesn't have a SINGLE issue, thats impossible we are humans after all, including the workers in the Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawa, Honda plants etc, I know that! :)

A. Search button does wonders.
B. 08 and 09 R1's are completely different bikes.
C. 07/08 Are identical bikes with the only diffence being colors and an updated ECU to resolve a very narrow "lag" issue which most 07's had and which was addressed via a service action by Yamaha free of charge.
D. The 07/08 is a very solid bike without many, if any serious issues.
E. All bikes with undertail exhausts suffer from heat to the rider. This is easily solved by getting rid of the stock cat/Y-pipe.
F. I cannot address anything with the 09 since I do not own one.

It does heat up quite a bit, it blows hot air out of the left side about ankle level, not really sure what is causing it. But to be honest with you, unless your ride around in shorts all the time, it is hardly noticeable, at least for me. The only issue I have had to date is that it seems to take some time starting up cold. It is really not much of an issue though, as it starts right up warm, and just takes an extra second while its cold. But i only have about 2500 miles on mine, and have had it for about 2 months.

Ha ha...sounds nice! You just boost my confidence in buying the R1 2008! :)

Which model is this? 2008 or 09?

First off welcome to the forums.
I am a current owner/rider of a 08R1 and let me tell you, the same excitement when I picked up the bike brand new, I still have til this day everytime I ride it. Onto some of the cons, too much people envy it, lots of people want it/ cant have it, and I cant stop the mod-bug from occuring:sneaky:crash lol. On the real though, the stalling problem has happened to a couple of us(including myself) on rare occasions. Some of the members that I have read went backed to their dealership and they installed new carbs free of charge. Its not that big of a deal, and Im going to try and get a custom PCIII map after I get all my mods on to see if this fixes the minor problem. Yes having an undertail exhaust will heat up, but I usually feel this when Im riding with shorts. Jeans and long pants, I barely feel the heat. Thats about it with the "problems" of the bike. Like you said yourself, every manufactuar is going to have their bad days.
Now between the 08 and 09, I cant speak for the 09 because I dont own one. One thing is, how deep your pockets are. Are you willing to spend about 4-5k for a new bike? Or buy a used but in a prestine condition bike and possibly use that extra 4-5k on mods to build up your taste/flavor on your bike?
I almost traded in my 08 for the 09, but realized that my bike is paid off, and I couldnt just trade in my gorgeous for something out of "wanting." Both bikes are beautiful, they both are kick ass, and their keep you wanting more out of it everytime you ride it.:flex::fork:fire
(sorry for the story telling post:fact)

That's the 1st time i've heard of anything past an 01 having carbs.:hammer:

Hmm...sound pretty good!!! :)

The idea of going with some extra equip for the 08 rather than the 09 is actually pretty good idea! Never thought about it, good angle!!! :p Actually the heat sounds good to me, I live in a cold place, so its free heat for my ass! ;)

Hey guys is it possible to post some pics of your R1? Would love to see it :D
The search button is your friend.:fact There are a million threads with pics of 07-08 R1's

Edit:
I just happened to come across this one.

My bad I dont recall if it was carbs or fuel injectors. And Im too damn lazy to search for the thread cause im big time jet-lagging from France haha. Oh and the Mods and Appearance link is always a good place to look up other peoples bikes, especially BOTM (Bike of the Month). You can get good ideas for your bike.

Cant speak of the 08, but the 09.

1. Its hot, even after stock cans and y pipe, I have wrapped my pipes, much better.

2. Its heavy, relativley speaking, takes a little effort to get into the corner.

3. Black is the best colour,,lol

4. Gearing is to tall from the factory, easily sorted

5. will numb ya arse on a long ride, ie 500+

6. Damn it sounds nice, easy to get the Blip disease...:epimp
