I'm looking at a 09 or newer R1 for my new bike. If I put on a slip on will that cause any issues with the performance or MPG? I know it will sound better and bump the HP a little but is there a down side?

If I get a full system and remap the ECU will that screw up the other ride modes and require multiple maps to get those other ride modes to work right?

I probably wont track this bike beyond a couple track days so it's more about sound and reliable performance for the long haul than track prep.

Thanks

Do the baffles and save some money, shouldn't lose a significant amount of mpg but get the ecu reflashed by someone on here using flash tune and u will love it. I wouldn't worry about mpg because you own a liter bike.....not the best on gas mileage. Do a Bmc filter, tune and a&r baffles.

+1 on the flashtune......takes the training wheels off.

Don't forget the midpipe to go along with your baffle kit: http://www.dan-moto.com/DM_US/yamaha-r1-2009-2011-cat-eliminator-pipe-product-579.html

Really helps the bike breathe by getting rid of the cat, and stops it from cooking the shit out of your ass and legs ;)

Cheap slip-on's that sound awesome: http://www.dan-moto.com/DM_US/yzf-r1-2009-2012-gp-carbon-product-363.html

Baffle kit if you just want your stock pipes to sound better: http://www.aandrmotorsport.com/store/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=506

As was said, check the air filter and if it's dirty replace it with a BMC street (or race) filter. They are cleanable so you won't need to replace it for a long long time.

Also check the chain and sprockets, see if they are in good condition. If they aren't replace them with http://www.superbikesupply.com/mm5/...e=SBS&Product_Code=drive-systems-520-yamaha&Category_Code=520-conversion-yamaha (most people go with a -1/+1, ask us if you need help figuring it out).

So if I?

So if I put on the slip on only I do not need to do a tuner or reflash ECU unless I want to ring every last bit of performance out of it? Basically if I stop at a slip on I'll get the sound and minor performance bump without any other changes or negative impact to the engine?

If I also do the y pipe to delete the cat then I probably should reflash the ECU or get a tuner since I will have opened up the exhaust to the point it needs adjustment?

Just out of curiosity if I do a full system or dump the cat will the bike still pass an emissions test?

You'll probably notice a slight reduction in power down low, below 7000rpm, with just slip-on's and no tune. You'll probably gain a few HP up top but your bike will be running slightly lean.

The Y pipe and slip-on's (or race baffles) makes a huge change to the exhaust flow so it's best to get an ECU flash with the proper fuel map in it for the mods you are doing. Not doing it will make the bike run scary lean and you'll have a bunch of spots in the power curve where you'll be making LESS power.

We don't have emission tests for bikes here, so I can't really answer that. 99.3% of emission tests physically look for the cat, so if they don't see one that could be a problem. They also usually use an exhaust gas sniffer, which I'm sure could tell you had no cat.

The only thing to consider with exhausts/Y-pipes is that it will be technically be illegal for the street (either for noise or for emissions system modification if you remove the cat), so it's something to consider depending where you live. When I was in Pennsylvania one shop wouldn't pass my inspection because I had a Yosh full system on an SV650S.

But now I'm in Florida and no one cares.

OEM exhaust mod to buy

Hi All. In case anyone is looking for a cheaper alternative to slip-ons and keeping the stock look for the 2009-2012 R1, I've got 2 standard cans modified similar to the A&R race baffle kit.
Will be putting it on eBay, looking for ÂŁ100 if possible. Some pics below:

i got mine dyno tuned down at the local harley dealer for 160. all i got done to mine is pcIII, y-pipe, two brothers, filter, and thats it. scary lean until you got in the higher R's. now the throttle response and low R's are real nice and smooth after warm up. after i can actually roll in and out of throttle instead of jurk in and out.

Just a word of advice, installing the A&R baffle kit is a PAIN in the ass!!!!! I have a couple scars to remind me of that adventure. They do have a nice sound though. Just depends if you want to attemp the install or spend a little more and get some slip-ons. I went with the hotbodies dual MGP's and got mine for $450.
