09 R1 starts, but immediately dies

So yesterday it was around 60 degrees in Michigan, so a few buddies and I went riding. At the conclusion of our trip, we were heading home and right before I got there, my bike started dying at idle at a stop light.
When it died, I started it again, it would idle for about 5 seconds and die again, to the point where now it barely cranks over and immediately dies right after it cranks over.

After doing a lot of research, I figured it could only be electrical or my engine oil.
First I say, engine oil because my engine light was on and figured I was low on oil. I put a few quarts in and still nothing happened.
Then I tried the battery itself, switched my friend's r1 battery and it would crank over but immediately die. I checked the rectifier, nothing seemed fried and wires were clean.
Checked the starter relay and fuses were good, starter relay all looked good.

Basically, it seems like the bike will turn on, crank over, but wont stay on and I'm honestly stumped.

Anyone ever had this problem or may know what it is?

Thanks in advance!

Wow! You added a "few quarts of oil" because you figured you were low. Do you have any idea how much damage you can do if you overfill your oil? You do know there is a sight glass, don't you? I'd do a full electrical check including checking your AC output on your stator wires. There's a lot of good info in the service manual on how to do this. If I had to guess, I'd say your R/R is bad or stator is gone.

ps What's the history on the bike? Any recent work on it or did you just fill the tank?

Appreciate the feedback, but it would've been stupid of me not to check the sightglass before adding oil, and there wasn't any in the sightglass when i straightened it up

Most likely not charging, put a battery charger on it while trying to run it. Drain oil, and fill to top line on sight glass window, then recheck after running. Correct oil level FIRST ! Oil light would have come on if low,not engine light. Engine light is for when bikes computer senses a problem. Should be showing a problem code as well on dash.

Haven't attempted today, but from my last tries when you turn it on, all the gauges and lights come on, as soon as you hit the starter, it'll crank over for a second, then immediately die off.
There was a situation where i let it sit for a hour or so, cranked it over it idled for 5ish seconds and then died.

If I potentially ran out of oil while riding, could I have caused there to be metal shards in my oil which could cause this issue?

How much oil did you have to add ? Put it on a battery charger and try running it. Make sure you have fuel, aftermarket fuel caps that aren't venting properly will cause this too. Open tank, check for fuel and try starting while on a charger.

I'm gonna go ahead and try that and look into everything everyone suggested.
Thanks for the input so far everybody

You said the check engine light came on... What's the code? And if you swapped batteries with a friend and the bike still died, then we can safely rule out the battery :lol Dump all the oil from the bike, change the oil filter, get that squared away. I would even dump the gas in the tank if it has been in there for too long or went through some drastic temperature changes. Did you check your coolant condition and levels? I would cover all the basics before trying to get all philosophical with the troubleshooting :dunno

Haven't had time to really look it over since i have classes and all, but definitely gonna take it apart on friday with a friend.
So I looked over all the posts and i noticed i meant to say oil light instead of CEL.
I took a good battery today from another R1 and put it in the bike and tried to turn it on, when i turned the key, lights all came on, signals functioned, but when i tried to start the engine, this time it couldn't couldn't crank over, and wouldn't start at all.

First thing im going to do is dump the oil, and we will see from there.
Now i'm somewhat worried that the engine may have locked up?

Solved -
Yesterday, we checked the oil, checked all the wiring, the rectifier, and all electricals we could think of.
In the end, we removed the engine cover and the crank shaft sensor was loose, which was causing it to slightly turn on and then immediately die.

Thanks everyone for the help and support!
