Hi all
Just picked up a 2000 r1 yesterday to add to my collection, but I have no idea about this bike. I rode it home from the mechanic's place yesterday, it was a hot day about 35 degrees or over 100 in the old scale , I wore jeans and a lightweight leather jacket but I couldn't believe how hot the frame and engine cases got on my 40 min ride home.
Is this normal ?
I couldn't touch the frame without gloves on.
The bike rode so well going home but I only have my Harley sportster and an Sr 500 to compare it with! They never get hot like that
:)

congrats and welcome to the mad house. first thing flush the radiator and change the oil, plugs, air filter, etc etc. then see if it still gets THAT hot.

Thanks for all the feedback on my r1 re overheating except for shorts and flip flops ! We call em stubbies and thongs in Oz dude.
I pulled the fairings off, got the radiator out and flushed it out, heaps of crap came out so that made me feel better.I've changed the oil and filter, the oil that came out still looked ok but I replaced it with motul 5100 and used a k and n filter.
Air filter might be a problem, when I pulled it off it wasn't dry, having the crankcase breather leading into the air box has me concerned that maybe the engine is a bit tired it's just short of 60 k
One other thing, when I climbed on my sportster to get parts i realized what a slug it is !
It's kinda like getting out of a Ferrari and climbing into a John Deere tractor.
Not sure if the sporty's gunna get much action now the R1's come into my life :)

How many is enough?

Yeah thanks mate
Seems like you've got a few bikes too, I promised the missus I'd start selling a few but it's hard to let them go.
There all gunna play second fiddle to the R1 for a while thou
I spent most of the day in the shed just getting familiar with where everything goes after pulling off the radiator and cleaning it out as well as changing the oil and filter, it sucks that I have to go back to work next week so that'll slow me down a bit:fork
