Was wondering if you guys had any info on which one is faster? I have been reading stories about how one is faster and how the other is faster. So now I bring it to you guys.

theres a guy that rides with us once in a while that has an 01 929. i consistenly own him on my 00r1 that has only a graves full exhaust. the owner told me he was impressed by my bike because he said he had a lot of work done to his bike. he diidnt get into an specifics but i could just tell he didnt understand why i pulled on him. he is about my weight maybe 10 lbs lighter and his bike is lowered. leaving a stop light he could get out on me a little bit and then i drive right around him.

i did a back to back test ride on a 929 then jumped on a 02 r1...lets just say that the r1 has legs!!! the 929 felt more like my 600 where you had to keep the rpms up to get 'er going, not calling the 929 a slow poke by all means.

My R1 will pull on my friends 03 954 but it hangs in there pretty good considering it only has a slip on.

faster???

If that's the main concern, you may want to look into a Zx14 or 'busa or a nitrous kit for either of the bikes you mentioned.

A skilled rider on a 929 (or a old honda hawk for that matter) will crush anyone on roads that take riding skills vs someone's riding a 7K or anything that is "faster."

Look into the Fireblades.com websight (sorry, not trying to plug). People who ride Honda love them. Yes, the 929 is down a few cc's...I had a 954RR, (929 bigger brother), my good friend in Colorado had a 02 R1. We both had PCIII's and a full exhaust system. Very close rides. We did several roll ons up I40 to Denver. I also had a 520 conversion.

You have to like the bikes for what they are. As stated, either one in the hands of a skilled rider are very quick machines. Enjoy either one. I have!

There's no replacement for displacement!

my 03 gsxr-750 was faster than my buddies 954. not by much but roll-ons. in 1st and then in 2nd. never went any higher than that.

Does it really matter which one is faster? Either one is a great machine, and will get you in trouble if you're not careful. Unless you're a pro racer, you won't be able to push either machine to its limits. They're both excellent bikes. I've ridden both, and own a 2001 R1. The R1 has a little more grunt, but either one is going to make you smile. Get the one that's more comfortable to YOU and the one that YOU like the looks of better.

I had a 94 fireblade, back in the days when it had the 16 inch front wheel. There was a lot of talk about how this was a problem.

I havent kept up with hondas since moving to Yamaha, so I guess I'm curious about when Honda went to a 17 inch front wheel? And yeah, I know its not relevant to the speed in a straight line discussion, but still curious anyways.

yea on bone stock bikes.. no pipes, no straps.. stock tires everything.. later with pipe and pc i went 10.50s on 929 no strap. i have seen some run in 9.20s as well. buddy had one, until he had terrible accident with it. it was fun bike to ride.. no doubt i wouldnt mind owning one. very wheelie happy bike. not fan of design of frame swingarm motor stuff. pull motor.. get some help... have to remove swingarm from frame and its not much fun to do.

I currently have a 929 and I've never been out ran by an older model r-1. That doesn't mean the 929 is faster it just means the guy riding the r1 is slower. I've riden r1's and love them. There is no doubt the r1 has an edge but I love fuel injection enough that if I had to buy a 2000-2001 model bike it would be a 929. They are a lot of fun and not slow by any means. But they are both close enough in speed that more then likely it will come down to the rider.

Ive ridden a 929 at its limit. It isnt as fast up top but it does feel alot more planted up front. The R1 is the faster of the 2, but it takes some balls to do it. The 929 is easier to hop on and feel confident on instantly. I like the feeling of the r1 being kinda on the limit. Call me stupid but whatever.

Back in 01 When I had my 01 R1, one of my friends had a 01 blk/ylw 929rr. We raced several times and he never beat me. Whether it was from a complete stop or roll on. Once I hit the higher rev range the R1 would walk away from the yellow bird. Everytime! Over 7k rpm the race was over! Good luck!
