Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I just bought a 2007 R1 with 3,700 miles on the clock so it's basically brand new. I sold my 2011 in April. What are some things I need to look out for with the older models? I plan on doing an oil change and having the dealership do a once over around 4,000 miles. It's bone stock and will eventually get around to doing the usual mods (exhaust, cat delete, power commander w/tune or flash). Other than that, she doesn't really need anything. I think she's beautiful. If she was a bit faster I'd be happier, but she'll do for now. I got her to 135mph last night and it felt like she still had a lot to give. There's a lot less low end power than the 2011 had, but honestly, it feels safer and more comfortable.

The throttle lag was fixed on the 08 and most of the 07's had the ecu replaced. There is a thread somewhere.

Personally I love the 4c8. She is kind of weedy down low, like you say, but boy does she have a pair of lungs. She will absolutely scream at the top.

The speedo quits reading at 189, but, she is still building revs. That's indicated of course, not tagged on a radar gun or anything. She's still stupid fast though. If you get the launch right she will come out of the hole like a banshee too.

Man I can't wait for my fairings to come in so I can get back to sending mine. Been too long.

I'd skip the sliders and go with race rails. Sliders like to crack frames.

Skip the pcv 5 too and go with a woolich ecu Tuner. Get more features out of it.

Adding a gear indicator has been a great quality of life add on too. Healtech is the brand name one but you can get one for $50 off Amazon too.

I was thinking about a gear indicator the other day while riding. This bike is a lot quieter than my last so I can't hear it over my music and I have to pay attention to the number of shifts. My last bike I could hear the exhaust and the tone of it told me what gear I was in 😂

OP / Dre77: I have a 2008 R1. I was concerned about Dre77's reply (post #14 above) about 'failed rotor issue'. I did a search and found this... Yamaha R1 Charging System Rotor Magnet Failure - Riders Corner New Zealand . According to this article, the problem was fixed by Yamaha in 2007 and later R1's with a new part ("They quietly replaced the poorly designed rotor with a new part in 2007 onwards. The new part is sold as a replacement for the 2005+ models when you go to order a replacement. Again, should have been a recall but Yamaha kept quiet about it.")

Can anyone confirm the rotor fix/new part for 2007 and later R1s? I have a relatively low mileage 2008...just getting back to riding this bike again after a long period away. While I've seen no indication of this problem, I would rather replace the rotor before a meltdown if needed. Apparently, when the rotor goes metal fragments are released in the engine oil. Not good...

Any confirmations of the rotor problem fix for 2007 and later models? Thanks all...

Its a common issue on the 2004-2015 R1.

Pull out the stator and have a look.

Be careful with the washer on the backside so it doesn't fall into the oil pan.
