2014 r1 clutch issues

Hello everyone. I've purchased a 2014 r1 with 12k miles. So far I'm happy with the bike. However there are two issues I have,

1. When the bike has been left over night for example (cold) then when I start it up and let it idle for about 3/4mins, then engage 1st gear, and go to set off the clutch is very grabby, very inconsistent considering I'm letting the clutch lever out smoothly. Also if I let the clutch lever out more quickly there's a "grinding like" noise while I'm letting the clutch lever out in 1st gear. This only ever happens from cold. When the bike is warm / hot the clutch feels a lot better and works how it should and is less grabby. Is the grinding noise the clutch plates? People say there is a graves clutch kit - does this fix this grabby clutch along with this grinding sort out noise during setting off when the bike is cold.

2. With the bike stationary, in neutral, then engage the clutch there is an obvious rattle type noise clearly coming from the clutch cover. The mechanic at the dealer thinks it's the anti judder springs have lost there spring effect and are loose during clutch engaging, hence the rattle?

Any feedback with same issues / problem fixes would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

What are you using for oil? My bike does the erratic, lurching, grabby clutch thing too when it's cold, but it goes away when warm. It doesn't make any weird noises like yours though.

I currently have Yamalube in there and am about to switch to Amsoil 10W40 synthetic this coming weekend. I know the clutches on these bikes are one of the few areas that seem to generally draw the ire of most owners, so it seems pretty normal based on everything I've read, but I'm hoping that the switch to a different (non-crappy) oil might somewhat change the cold characteristics of the clutch for the better.

Hey buddy.

With regards to which oil, I'm unsure what the dealer put in, I'll need to find that out. I've only had the bike about 3 weeks. I'll also need to have a look and see what type of oil the service manual says to use?

Really strange as this grabby clutch behaviour seems to be common in the newer r1's. For me, this is a big put off. Now my bike has 12k miles on the clock so I don't know if the clutch has already suffered damage hence the almost "grinding" like noise from setting off with a cold engine. When the bike is warm / hot the clutch is ok and the weird grindy noise goes away!

I'm very keen to go down the graves clutch kit route. Although does the graves clutch kit consist of all the clutch or just the first clutch plate within the clutch stack? I'd need the clutch taken out and inspected I think to be honest huh? I may have to get the whole clutch replaced and take the graves kit route as I have read the graves clutch kit fixes the grabby behaviour.

also I'm quite annoyed about this rattle like noise with the clutch engaged? Mechanic thought it needs new anti judder springs as the ones in the bike are worn and tired?

Thanks

Ok so, I'm not the only one to have experienced that funny noise that happens sometimes when pulling away when the bike is cold? Grinding is maybe the wrong word, it's hard to describe? It only does it sometimes from cold. Yes once the bike is warm it goes away. Yes I agree with your theory regarding fanning the clutch while the bike warms up, I'll try that too.

So as for the graves clutch kit. Does this consist of a complete clutch kit or is it just the first clutch plate that they supply? Reason I'm asking is because I'd quite like to put a complete new clutch in there.

Thanks for the reply

Hey everyone, So its been 7 years since i got the bike brand new. Fella's gone thru one heck of a ride in this lifetime with me. So i decided to change the clutch basket since it started to sound like a ducati. I am writing this post so that i get some insights from the more well experienced folks over here :)

Before changing the clutch basket:
1. The bike felt like a ducati when clutched in
2. There was no way of releasing the clutch fully below 38km/h on 1st gear
3. when riding in the morning (cold ride) it was super hard to shift gears, often i have to blip to slide into upper gears
4. the vibration was !@#$ing annoying
5. on standstill and when in neutral, if i hold the revs, up till 2.8k rpm its super rough but after 2.8k rpm its smooth

After changing the clutch basket:
1. i can FINALLY fully release the clutch from 25km/h on 1st gear
2. WELL i can even cruise at 38/h on 2nd gear. But i try not to do this. I know this is gonna be stressin that clutch basket
3. i can now pull off to higher speeds on first gear comfortably without having to half clutch in
4. i feel an increase in power
5. BUT NOW ON STANDSTILL, its is rough no matter what rpm. It isnt as smooth as how it used to be ( could it be because the new clutch basket needs time to break in? or am i just talking some nonsense? )
6. Now the bike doesnt sound like a ducati anymore when i full clutch in
7. gear shifting is now a bliss ( but as usual with this model, the clutch slack is a continous pain in the ass )

Okay, what i am really concerned about is, that i used to have a smooth ride when my rpm is above 7k. but now i no longer feel the smoothness. its rough no matter what the rpm is. Why would this be the case? im puzzled. I do not run the grave's clutch kit. mine's fully stock. ANd right now the clutch basket, friction plate and metal plates are all new. Why is it then it is rough right now? This is kinda bothering me and so this is why i decided to post about this. ( i used to be on motul 300v, but right now im on OWS 10w40 )

I dont have any issue shifting gears. im even able to shift into all gears at 3k rpm
but at 80 on 6th gear, bike still pulls to higher speeds but of course, its a lil jerky
same applied when im on 90km/h and on 6th gear
but when im at 100km/h and above on 6th gear theres no jerky picking up of speed.

PS: on 3rd gear from 6k rpm, my balls ... yeah u can feel the annoying vibration pretty much.

Could someone just share some insights on this? I really appreciate any support or advise on this :D
