So I've just said it! Yes I have the feeling that my old GSX is better at taking corners and more nimble than my 03 R1.

I am working on getting the right suspension setup but alll in all the R1 does not feel nimble, nor stable incomparison to the oldsckool bike.

On twisty hyways the R1 is ok, and I do travel faster overall due to the faster corner to corner times, but I had the feeling that by getting an R1 I would have a much easier time in corners.

So what is the story? Are these bikes only good for sweeping tracks with faultless surfaces or smooth line hyways? I got th beast to tear up twisty mountain roads so have I done a major mistake by selling my old Suzok? have all those magazines been lying to us to make us buy new, lesser bikes?

Please be honest guys let me know what you think.:epimp

This is not a stunk, honest! I am just frustrated like crazy and I'm sure lots of people out there just need an excuse to step out of the closet.

For your info it took me two years of analysis and generally driving my friends crazy to decide on the R1, so I really thought I had it nailed. Does not semm to be the case honestly!

Are you on Crack Buddy?

are you serious? hehe you know what i think? youve been riding that ole zook for so long anything else is gonna feel bizarre to you

you gotta get your suspension dialled in and get used to the bike imho

Thought so too. But I've been fidling with the suspention and I think I am at 75%. The reason I started that thread is that one of my bike guru friends took it for a ride today and he basically looked at me and told me the old girl faired better in corners.

I came back to the office and I started the thread:dunno

The general feeling I have is that it is too top heavy and quite unstable unless going at high speed in not too tight turns.

And no I am not on crack. A couple of dubbies from time to time but not when I am ridding:sneaky

My roomate had an '82 750 when I had my '03 and it wasn't even ****ing close. I mean not by a mile. The R1 was superior is ever possible way. Obviously. :bs

I've got an 87 FZR 1000, and 3 R1s. The R1s are not even remotely as flickable as the FZR. But they are so far superior to it in every other way. Don't forget the 80's sport bikes had skinny ass rear tires. The FZR has a 160 rear. Of course it flicks easy. It also is heavy with a high CoG, helping it intiate a lean.

this was my gsx-1100, and it was a p.o.s compared to my 98r1 :fact there is NO comparison. something must be wrong with your bike: steering damper too tight: tyres too worn/flat or dont suit you, or something bent on the bike maybe? the possibilities are endless.

I felt the exact same way on my R1. Compared to my Gix, it felt unstable and even downright scary at times.

I'm working on dialing my suspension and it is helping but I don't think it will ever feel as comfortable and stable as my Gix. Keep working on yours. How is your tire pressure? What do you weigh? The bike's stock suspension is setup for a lightweight rider.

Do you know any experienced riders or better yet, racers, who could help you dial it in and go over the bike? That would help alot.

Good luck.

Could it be low tire pressure or worn (flat spot) tires?

You've probably put a ton of miles on the old GSX, and become very familiar with it.

Now, you go to a bike that is a complete night and day difference in every way. It will take time to get used to it. You don't just hop on something new and different, and ride the same as before.

It has nothing to do with the old BIKE being faster than the new bike. It's just YOU that's faster on the old bike. For now, anyway.

Give it time. You'll learn the new one and wonder how the hell you rode the old beast like you did.

Ok so this thread has netted some serious and helpfull hints with a focus on tyres. Yes mine do not look so fresh and yes the GSX has a 150 rear tyre.

I did not realise narrower tyres made for more flickability, I thought more tyre = more contact = more lean = more speed in corners.

The thread also revealed Krikor as being anal retentive but it was worth it otherwise.

On a more intelligent note I weight 230lb - 240lb with my kit. I got a 25mm front static sag with 8 lines showing and 28mm rear static sag with max preload. I have lowered the front by 7mm and I am fine tuning compression and rebound (it will take some time).

Any sugestions to make the bike more flickable? 180 rear tyres? BT014 OR BT-020?

Thanks for the help

Blur mine is a bit different (was, I sold it!) Its an ES. I have attached a pic of my old beast.

:lol :lol :lol ...That's a good one !!!

Is your bike stock? Set sag at 35mm rear,40mm front

Front comp at 12 out/rebound at 12 drop fork 5mm in the trees

Rear comp at 14 out/ rebound at 14

This is for a stock suspension

PS If your running a tall front tire (pilots) drop the front 10mm

I've riden a 1100 es and it wouldn't be anywhere in sight behind my '02......:riding :thumbup :beer

My settings are close to yours, I just like a bit less compression and bit more rebound.

I rode my es with r1s and other superbikes before getting the r1 and i was in front on twisty hyways and riding behind the best in the twisties. I got the r1 because I realised I was begining to ride outside the limits of the bike. I was going to kill the engine and or kill myself.

Today I whent on a long ride with my new suspension setup. the r1 now feels better. Still top heavy though. I need new tyres and still no recomendations bt010, 014 or 020?

Dude, change your user name. I'm the "real" Michel. This board isn't big enough for the both of us. Just kidding. Honestly, it may be down to the longer wheelbase making the bike feel more stable. Don't confuse the ability for your R1 to fall into corners as being an unstable trait...it's just the opposite. But proper setup is a must. Are there any really good bike shops near you with an experienced suspension guy? Probably not if you're really in Lebanon but hey, it's a shot in the dark!

the comparison is near enough for this discussion:hellobye and i use (currently) for the street the new bridgestone 014 tyres:fact . you should go for a very triangular profile tire for flickability ,but again its a tradeoff as once leaned over its more difficult to come back up, or so the experts say. what tires have you got now? and maybe getting a adjustable ride height link to jack the rear might help???:dunno a r1 will never "feel" stable compared to a old gixxer, i know ive had both, along with many other older big bikes , stability on a r1 comes with MORE speed:fact dont believe me, go to a race track and the difference is night and day!:hellobye
