need a little help. just purchased a brand new 08 all black r1 and im looking to start with the mods here before riding season roles around. i think i have narrowed it down to the akrapovic and graves as far as brands go for the exhaust that i want but im not sure where to go from there.

lil info...im not really in to track riding (haha i say that now). honestly im all about looks and how it sounds. i want that deep sound and nothing too raspy.

so...carbon vs. titanium, any difference?

full exhaust vs. slip on, should i go full if im not too concerned with horsepower or will full give me the best sound? if i get a slip on can i buy the rest of the parts later to make it a full exhaust?

sorry for the long post, just excited about this new bike experiance.

Akrapovic>Graves. Akra has better fit and finish. Go with the full exhaust because both those brands CANNOT be upgraded to full exhaust later if you go slip on route now, unless you match it up with an Arrow header. Akra and Graves slip on systems are designed differently then their full. Carbon exhaust looks dated faster. If I was you I would go Akrapovic Evo II's. Those are bar none the sexiest exhaust you can get for your bike, especially with your colour.

i know its not an akra or graves...
but please consider about this exhaust i use on my 08 too....Arata full titanium with shorty carbon end can.....
guys, this arata sound SICK, DEEP, and LOUD!!!!...trust me man.....

i ve been on akra, leovince, yoshi, etc....no others brand can compare with Arata's sound....after trying so many exhaust brand....this arata is the exhaust ive been looking for long time......:)

the quality of the product is the best so far, the weld is unbelieveable bro...but its :dollar:dollar:dollar...since its japan made exhaust

just some food for thought...

i have to admit that those do look pretty sweet. when you say pricey how much more would i be looking at? anyway i could hear a sound clip? thats really my biggest saleing point right now to be completely honest. i also like how they have the older can look on the end vs the plastic looking rounded off stuff that other companies are using now. i know that they say it will produce more horses but i really just like the look of yours

Yeah, Arata is super nice exhaust as well. Wish they offered slash cut tips like the Akra's.

so i just noticed that arata offers a matt black finish which sounds pretty much perfect. has anyone seen this in person and know if it looks legit or not? how do you think that would be as far as ware and tear goes compared to the carbon

I just put a akra evo full system on my bike. I got the carbon cans and its is sick as hell. It looks great now, im a little worried about the carbon wear but for now it looks amazing and the sound is incredible. It has a nice deep and strong sound, not raspy or whiny at all. I'll try to get some pics up later today

As far as Carbon being dated you really are talking about a while not in a year or so actually. Akra does have good carbon and the key to Carbon is waxing it when you wash your bike or in intervals sounds funny but does extend the life in the sun. take it from being stationed in FL My carbon cans never looked dated. and now in Alaska where we have almost 20hrs of daylight no problems. back to the question..

neither can be upgraded to full from slip on. akra is a raspy exhaust carbon over Ti is always raspier. I think that Akra is always a better finish over Graves I run Graves and kick myself for not buying the evolution system. if you are not racing then just buy a slip-on save some dough for other parts. slip-ons are good for sound. you get into a full system and then you will be into a pwr commander fueling it maps etc etc... Graves IMHO has great sound quality but nothing to brag about and now on the these newer bikes I have heard all the diff exhaust and to me the only brand to ever stick out is Termignoni(sp) which has beautiful carbon and the sound is friggin amazing deep throaty in low RPM's when your blurping it and nice raspy race track sound in the high RPM's.

but Cabon will look sick on that bike and since it is undertail your talking minimal sun exposure and like I said before It will not look worn if you give it a little more attn during her sponge bath! good luck

yea thats exactly what i've hear about carbon being a more raspy exhaust but i think im still going with it because well obviously im trying to stick with the "black on black" theme, maybe a few gold things here and there to match up with the stickers like some pazzo levers and maybe the rearsets but other than that im trying to keep it black...

thanks for the tip about waxing though...i'll def keep that in mind, just any wax worked for you in FL or did you find one that was better than the other?

Akra is crap. Trust me. You don't want it. There are better alternatives. I had to sell this POS on ebay and take a loss. It even had baffle hanging out of it when I got it.

Akra was mostly unresponsive and the guy I did talk to barely spoke English.

And just look at the carbon fiber in the picture. It doesn't look like any carbon fiber I've ever seen. The pattern is asymmetrical and they skimp material on the bottom to save $$$. They said "most people don't mind since it's on the bottom."

My customer service experience with Devil has been worlds different. The mid pipe could have been better, but the cans are phenominal. Plus you can do the full exhaust later. (You have to remove two header pipies when you change the oil filter.)

:fact

that is seriously messed up dude.
I thnk the retailer should be responsible for that. They could have exchanged it with the manufacturer without a question being asked and nobody would lose a dime in the process. So I think that was 58cycle who really screw you.

Power is very similar...akra is a little deeper....graves aren't bad at all...many just prefer the akras over graves for looks...Personally I don't like the look of the rear pipes at all...lol thats why I went the moira route:) But its raspy as fawk at idle but I love the scream she makes above 4k!!!!!

Arata has some of the meanest sound I ever heard on an 02-03 R1.....that's why after 2 yrs and 12k miles... I went with a full Ti Arata after hearing almost all offerings. I miss that sound especially from 5k up.

Never heard it on an 04-08 but like the look. If I had not been an ass and did things backwards I would have an Arata on my 06 R1. Instead I bought Arrow headers , an Akra Y-pipe and ran them thru stock cans for last season(I bought the bike a leftover in Jan 07) Just this past weekend I installed Akrapovic hex CF slip-ons. So technically I have a full system now....Arrow headers, Akra Y-pipe and slip-ons. Sound is sweet and I love it thus far.....but it doesn't move me like the Arata sound on my 02 R1. I ran the Arata on that bike from 7k miles to 40k miles when I sold it......and it looked great after all those miles.

Alot of awesome pipes to chose from though

hmmmm...me have been on so many exhaust brand....no one can match the sound of this arata...there is a unique scream sound from arata from 6k up, i cant describe this with a word but its amazing sound.....
for me akra is deep, but not loud enough for me.....i have akra on my old 05...dunno about the carbon crack/damage

I just ordered a Graves full system for my bike(got it from tobefast). This is my first exhaust from Graves(full titanium with carbon cans). I had a Devil system on my old bike, a 2k3 gixxer 750, the Devil carbon was beautiful. Although I think the devil exhaust looks awful on the 04-newer R1`s, the cans are to big in diameter & too long IMO. I`ll post up some pics when my Graves system gets here(supposed to show up on Thursday)

do not get me wrong I run good HP #'s with my graves and the finish and fit are on spot perfect. I think Akra Ti looks better and blue's faster which is very sexy to me. and the akra sounds way better than my graves I do not think Graves changes sound to much. but if we are talking about looks and sound Akra is for me. I used to run a BLACKWIDOW and if you have ever had the priviledge of owning that slip on or hearing it OH MAN i would say hands down that is the baddest slip on the planet and every forum member here will agree. I only got rid of it to upgrade to a full system for racing.

R1eeS4e I woud say IHMO I can not stand Devil and I think there sound is very Hollow like something is missing and the welds are very cheap but this is when they were coming out strong in years past. but your akra delima i believe is just one of those things that slipped by quality assurance. Termi is stock cans for Ducati they are pricey but man when you are around other bikes that are canned you will be noticed first by sound.

but you want to talk of price to go to a full system for my MV is $7K hahah wish they made something in the Termi price range for me

and when i say CF are raspy I mean in an awesome way I like it def. a sporty bike sound and it is not squidish to crackle the throttle at the red light the chics love it hahaha. it is ok to want to be young at the stop light but an adult with the throttle.

#37 ·
and the wax is any wax your fav brand will work fine just do it in the shade with a cool pipe. plus the CF will keep your tush a tad cooler in the summer.

#44 ·
Yeah, Akra seems to be top pick but now with their 20% price increase I bet other companies such as Graves will be getting more business.

#45 ·
If i recall correctly, I think akra is better for midrange and graves for high end power, but slip ons is comparable and the difference is mainly looks.

I like the evo 2 short cans, but also want a carbon. Dont like how the evo sticks out.
