Well, I'm pretty speechless right now. Bike has 1,267 miles on it and broke in according to Yamaha specs. I started hearing a ticking sound on throttle, but would disappear when off throttle. Some time thereafter, at around 8k-9k rpms, on throttle, hear a sound liking escaping air and a big puff of smoke out the exhaust. Shut it down immediately, but it can't be good. Too late to take it to the dealer, but will do so on Tuesday. I'm so bummed right now I could cry :cryin. I've never had a bike fail like this before so I'm pretty disappointed. Hopefully Yamaha will pull through without putting me through a lot more pain, but we'll see. I'll keep you all updated.

Man, Sorry to hear that, I now have 1,100km on mine and so far it runs great, someone earlier said he has one and it scares the hell out of him hearing stories like that, I relate to that.

I was riding HONDA bikes before, brand new CBR600F3 and 2 years later brand new CBR900RR. did over 20,000km on the 600 without a slightest problem and also 18,000km on the 900 also flawlessly.

YAMAHA is new to me and I will monitor it closely, I change bikes every 2 years, if the new 04' R1 will give me grief I will go with the 1 Liter HONDA machine in 2006, already this year I was struggling with a decision whether I should get the CBR1000RR or the YZF-R1, I obviously chose the R1, but how it performs and how reliable it will be will determine my future choices.

Hope you'll get fixed quick, YAMAHA should just give you new machine and take this one to the LAB.

Wish you all the best.

Man Im picking mine up May 12th... How did you break yours in???

I would really like to know.

You can PM me if you like.. I think that this controversial "break In" deal is a key in some of the stuff that is going on..

PLEASE PLEASE tell me how you broker er in..

Thanks,

Do you guys think it would have anything to do with the engine bracket thing that had some bikes required to come in for a tightening?? Just a thought.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. Break in was per manufacturer recommendations. Oil and filter changes at 200mi, 600mi and 1,000 miles. Had planned on another oil and filter change at 1,500mi and then switch to Mobil 1 MX4T at 3,000mi, same as my 99 R1. Until today, my bike had not been over 7k rpms, but today, it hit as high as 11k rpms as my bike now has well over 1,000mi on the odo. The first sign something was wrong was the ticking, it was unusually loud, but like a knucklehead, i didn't think much of it as this bike has consistently ticked. The ticking was very noticeable between 3-5k rpms and disappeared above 7k rpms, but perhaps this was due to the increased engine and wind noise which may have masked the ticking. Be careful out there guys, I know everyone thinks the ticking is normal, and I agree, my 99 R1 also had the tick, but this tick is really noticeable and seems to originate from the left side of the engine. I don't want to see anyone get hurt so just be careful and keep an eye out on your ride. Perhaps this is an isolated case and I hope you guys are not affected. I'm still gonna stand on my position that manufacturer recommended break-in is the best method, after all who knows the bike better than the maker. I'd be very curious to know the cause of this though and perhaps have the oil tested.

I already have SS braided lines, graves fender eliminator, graves frame sliders and solo rear seat cowl installed. I have the CF Akrapovic exhaust and PCIII which I had planned to install next week, but which now seems pretty unlikely and Ohlins steering damper and CF heat shield on order with Shane. I have a trackday scheduled for May 23rd, so I was hoping to have everything installed so I could take the R1 on its first track outing, but it seems pretty unlikely at this point also. Man I even picked up a set of rennsports yesterday in a 120/70 and 190/55, what a waste. Since I have to take my 996R, I have to get a 180/55 since it has a 5.5 inch rim. This has got me so bummed right now, it's hard to concentrate, hopefully I'm coherent and making sense.

I would have rode the bad boy home.

You may have nothing wrong with it at all. Will the bike even run now?

Also, u did the entire 1000 miles without going over 7000 RPM?

The manual says: "NO prolonged operation above 7000RPM till 600 miles" and "NO prolonged operation above 8000RPM till 1000miles"

So riding up and above those RPM's was and is fine, just not droning for long periods above them.

Anyways, please let us know what happens and what is discovered.

Good luck

I hope the dealer treats you good. He should since you just plunked
down all that money for a new bike. Sounds like you've done every
thing by the book on your part.

Sorry to hear about your 04 R1. What a freaking bummer, You want to sell your pipe and power commander? Just kidding! I have 1,200 on mine and so far all seems well. I have got on her a bit (up to 12500K) in the last 200 miles and it is unbelivable FAST, I haven't heard any ticking yet (and I hope I don't)

BTW, Does your manual say to change your oil and filter at 200 and 600? My manual said at 600. I changed it at 500 and I'm planning on changing it at 1500.

please let us know what theysay the problem is. :scared

Bike still runs, but I have no intention of starting it at this point. I shut it down as soon as I heard the noise and saw the smoke, which was almost simultaneous and had it trailered home. Yeah, I didn't go over 7k rpm's for the entire break-in period, but if you think that's hard, I didn't go over 5k rpm for the first 600mi and over 6k rpm until 1,000mi on my 99 R1. That bike was perfect for the two years I had it and the 12k miles I put on it. What's really funny is that my Duc has been absolutely flawless and burns absolutely no oil using Motul 300v...go figure.

I guess my biggest concern is not the potential for finger pointing, but that the actual problem is identified and properly corrected as I still have to ride this bike after the fact. I'm hopeful Yamaha will pull through on this issue.
