Another crossplane cold starting problem

Hey guys, I've been working on this problem for a few months & searched all over the forums with not much luck. Here is the story...

Bought the bike off craigslist with about 1000 miles on it 8/26/12. Never noticed any starting problem other than the cct which was swapped out under factory recall a month later. I've flashed the ecu with the flashtune interface a few times, BMC filter with air box mod, AIS smog plates, M4 y-pipe, Two Bros slip-ons, Moty Design 8 cell lithium battery (even though the oem batt still read 12.4v), & the coolant has been replaced with water/water wetter mix. Also have watsen signals & motodynamics integrated tail light if that makes a difference. After reading about the starter issues I removed & disassembled mine only to find out it was in great working condition. Next removed the cam cover to check that sensor but it was also good. Currently have 6k miles on the bike & the problem seems to be electrical & cold related & I'm pretty much stuck. Any suggestions???

Wow, that was a cold starting problem. Mine does the same thing occasionally. I just figured its because mine can go a week or so without getting touched :dunno

I'm in for this one

mine was doing this, Its always cold in the uk, Was just my battery, Changed it for another one and keep it on a optimizer its been fine for over a year now.

Just to add I didnt touch the throttle when cranking and would eventually start.

The throttle rocking helps for some reason, even if it does flood it a bit.

I'm pretty sure its not the fuel lines. When I removed the starter I was all up in the fuel lines & everything look good. My gauge cluster dosen't stay powered on unless its been cranked a few times or its warmer outside. Got to be something electrical....sensor????

No warrenty & I don't really like the dealership or taking my bikes to a shop really. Sorta hands on diy kind of person.

Dose the some problem in the same manner with the stock battery back in it.

Someone on youtube sent me a message telling me its the temp sensor so I'm gonna check into that today. Thanks for all your suggestions & keep the ideas coming.

Somewhere I heard or read that using the kill switch shuts off the fuel and creates a sort of 'LAG' in the fuel line.. this is why the R1 never starts on the first 1-3 second attempt.. I was told to stop using it and just turn the bike off with the key and it would stop this.. I have not tried this yet but go ahead and try it...

I know for me the bike always starts right up after short trips with short stops.. meaning the bike doesn't cool down overnight!

The lithium batteries have a tendency to do this in cold weather. Sounds like it goes slow turning over. What happens is the battery has to wake up. I will stop and start a few times and it will catch. I crack the throttle open just a touch. I do this with my 05 which has cams and gasket. It has a speedcell super bike battery. Starts after a few attempts. My 10 has the speed cell had the 6.9 and does it but not nearly as often. This happens in very cold weather. Have no issues in normal weather

Hmmm, Think I'm gonna try to jump start it tomorrow morning when its cold enough & see if thats the issue. 65 degrees really isn't that cold compared to other riders winter weather....Maybe even take the battery out tonight & keep it warm then try it in the morning too....

i know u have already messed around with the battery alot but just throwing in my experience. when my 09s battery isnt at 100 percent it does the same exact thing in cold weather. the starter sounds like its has enough juice to crank it but it wont. once i started using the trickle charger it all went away. hope u figure it out bud

I have an alien motion eight cell battery with the charger and I put my bike on the charger once a week. It will still start exactly like that even though it's been on the charger And has a full charge :dunno

Also one thing to add I dont think I read in the thread yet is to just turn the key to completely on and just wait a good 30 seconds to a minute for the battery to "warm up". That's what shorai recommended for my battery in the cold sub 50 temps

I probably only wait until the fuel pump stops priming, I'd guess 10-20 seconds.

Gearheaded
Does your guage cluster turn off when you cold start also? I swear that when the cluster finally stays on the bike fires up right away....otherwise its just cranking.

Yes, when cranking the guages go out, and eventually it fires up. I'll take a video of it today and see what it does.

As for the 12cell comment, my bike has no lights, horn, hand controls, or rear brake light to draw power. I talked to a few different companies before buying my battery and all three companies suggested an 8cell battery for a track bike :dunno

OK, think I've got this one figured out. Couldn't do much today because it was so hot in SoCal that the problem was not there. I decided to put my battery in the fridge for about 2-3 hours & put it in the bike quick to simulate the cold weather. BAM!!! The slow cranking & no power guage cluster were back. So my moty design 8 cell lithium battery loses power in cold temps. The battery is about 6 months old & has always given me the issue. Think its a defect or is this just how these batteries are???

I would recommend getting a OEM battery...I have been running mine for 3 years and 50 000km with no such issues...and although we dont get such cold weather here in SA it still drops close to 0 degrees celsius in winter.

Just my 10 cents...

I have an 09, and yea it doesn't like to start in the cold either. My trick is to hit the starter, let it turn over a couple of times, release the starter and wait for a couple of seconds, then hit the starter again - usually fires up OK, and that's after leaving it unused for about a week or two. This motor reminds me of the way in which my old Honda Firestorm used to be - hated being started in the cold. But when I say cold, I mean Western Australian cold, which might not be as cold as what you Northerners are talking about.

It was because the lithium battery did not have enough juice to crank the motor below 70-75°. The battery ended up swelling up so bad at my last track event that I had to bump start the whole 2nd day. Not a fan of the moth design lithium 8........

when we say a lithium ion battery is hard to start on cold, usually it only takes one or two half starts
this gets the electrons moving and should start just fine in 3rd attempt, usually the 2nd..

in fact, most of my local buddy's here in Canada, dont even do a fake start, they just turn their headlights on n' wait 5-10 seconds

bam! she jumps to life...

LFX18 SHORAI is what i use, i would not go back to OEM if YAMAHA paid me!!... :no

mind you if the issue comes back, more than likely its your starter motor, i had to replace mine just out of warranty :(

I bought my 09 stock with 1200 miles, bike was 3 yrs old w original battery, had problems with starting. I put Leo Vince exhaust w Y pipe, flashed ecu, replaced stock battery w alien motion 8 cell lion , bike starts on 1 st or 2nd start, but when gets hot can't start it , gauges goes off and starter don't even spin, when I let it sit for5 min, engine cools of and it starts on first kick! My thought is - bad starter motor or when engine is hot both fans on it draw lot of juice so it can't start.....anyone else here has same problem when engine is hot ? also problem could be battery - has not enough cranking amp too keep feeding all that electrical components....I had 1200 ccm bike before and that battery was way bigger with more cc amps end never had any issues like that....did mama Yamaha failed? find solution or pass the problem on someone else? I just like xplane motor...but don't wanna deal with this BS ...its newer bike and it should run like champ!! help..ideas...suggestions....c'mon gear heads ;-)

This is an update on the hard starting issue. The relay did work for a while but started doing the same thing. Ended up replacing the starter. When i pulled the old one out it felt very notchie. It cranks and fires right up.
