Big thanks to BSR-1....I crashed

Just wanted to give big props to BSR-1. He hung out with me in the heat and on-slaught of bugs for a couple of hours while we waited for my dad to bring his pickup. We went riding on Palomar yesterday and I was being stupid and pushing way to hard for an unfamiliar rode. I was riding about 75% when a turn suprised me forcing me to lean further and pushing me to 100% to keep from crossing the double yellow. I started dragging knee hard and touched the peg down. I was fine holding that line until I seen a car coming the opposite direction. Because I knew I was at 100%, I guess the presence of the car startled me and either caused me to twitch on the bars or just barely touch the front brake. The front went from under me and I slid across. The bike wedged itself under the guard rail, and I bounced off the guard rail post with my shoulder.

I was fully suited and my leathers did a fantasitc job (+1 for Fieldsheer). No rash whatsoever. The leathers actually looked untouched. However, they couldn't protect me from the collision with the guard rail post. My shoulder blade has a crack fracture. But that's it. So I think I'm pretty lucky. Doc put me in a sling and said take it easy. This was my first crash and I've been riding for 6 years. It shouldn't have happened because I knew better than to be pushing it in a canyon and I shouldn't have let the car startle me. But oh well, live and learn...literally. The bike has a lot of cosmetic damage but should be fixed pretty soon. Doc said I'll be out of commision for about four weeks. Just in time for my next track day where I should've been in the first place. I'll post pics later.

Ride safe out there guys.

Glad you're ok, bro, nothing too major for you or the bike.....Good to hear you'll be back on your feet in no time.

All these crashes of varying severity have had some kind of mental impact on me, too.....my Sunday morning solo blast over the mountain was much more subdued and mellow.

Glad you're OK and realized your mistake, so it won't happen again. The worst kind of rider just keeps on riding harder until...

it's because you let off the throttle and off the gas too much.
Since when are those 2 different things ? :2bitchsla

Couldn't help myself :beer :beer :beer

If the front tucks in a corner, it's because you let off the throttle and off the gas too much.
Tapping the front brake at full lean will also tuck the front end.

That's true but since he doesn't remember if he tapped the front brake or turned the bars, I would surmise he let off the throttle, which is the normal response. Unless BlueBird knows how to trailbrake and does it with regularity, and with only 6 years riding experience (he would remember tapping the front brake), I would say he didn't get anywhere near the front brake. Many riders find it hard to tap the front brakes while in the middle of a corner because they have taken their fingers off the brake lever to gain more leverage on the bars. Even racers take their fingers off the levers in the turns, most of the time, to gain more leverage while leaned over. If BlueBird countersteered the bike too much, the rear wheel would have stepped out on him at that lean angle. Since he stated the front washed out, the highest possibility is he cut the gas a little too much. Many riders do this in a panic situation when an object suddenly appears ahead (and his sounds like a panic situation), startling them, thus in fear of hitting the object. Many riders do this not knowing or not realizing that they have.

sounds like it could have been nasty (guard rails *shudder*) glad you came out of it ok.

dunno maybe you did make a bad input that caused the front to wash out, and i dunno what machine you are on but anyways my 04 used with stock suspension settings used to drift the front out first everytime, a trait that i hate in a bike

i ended up taking some damping out of the front and adding a click of preload in the rear which i think helped even out the traction balance

edit: ps if you do start testing traction limits and suspension settings do it away from guardrails mang! ;)

Well I may have touched the front brake because from all my track day pictures I always ride with one finger on the brake. But, I think it is more likely I let off the gas before touching the brake as that seems like a normal panic response. But thanks guys, It didn't really hit me about how bad it could've been until I was waking up again this morning to see another day.
