Body Position Under Brakes

Howdy.

I was curious as to some of the views here on body position under hard braking. I realise this is personal preference and such there would a few views on the subject.

I was doing some testing at a recent track day and focusing on squeezing my legs on the tank coming into the braking zone and felt that I was a lot better for it as far as the difference in braking distance went. Unfortunately as my right knee is still not holding weight under flexion very well I found that I was having a hard time adjusting my lower half's position on entry. In the last session I tried moving my butt off first and then squeezing the legs and that also worked but I didn't really have enough time with it.

I watch WSBK and MotoGP, along with the odd AMA race and there seem to be a few different styles. The motogp boys seem to hook their outside leg to the tank and almost jam their inner thighs on the back of the tank with the inside leg either trailing or getting max wind breakage.

Anyway, just though I'd ask some opinions. Thanks all.

I usually get my butt back in the seat on the straight, as I approach my brake marker I shift it to the inside a bit, then use both knees to grab the tank on the brakes and extend my inside as I turn in.

Putting the knee out first puts a lot more strain on your one leg, and trying to change your body position when entering the corner isn't a good idea.

When you shift to the inside, what is primarily keeping you on the bike? What bears most of your weight - the inside or outside leg? Sometimes I feel that I'm using my outside leg to hang on to the tank and other times I feel that I'm using my inside leg to "stand" on the footrest. I'm trying to figure out which is the proper way to do it. When I'm bearing my weight on my inside leg it sometimes feels like I have as much as 80% or 90% of my weight on that leg. Is that a good thing to feel or is that too much? Should I be using the outside leg more to hang on instead? Is this an individual preference thing or is there a proper way?

Thanks!

+1 on above. depending on the corner, my body is forward and on the proper lean side of the bike while squezing the tank like hell. I like to back the rear in a lot and having my weight up at this spot seems to work well. But, come to think of it, it doesnt really matter where I put my body; I am only 145lbs so it doesnt do a darn thing:lol

Thanks for the feedback! So just to clarify... when you say "split" do you mean that each of the 3 (inside foot, seat, outside leg) take 1/3 of the weight each? Or when you say "normal" and "comfortable" are you saying that it's really up to me and that if 80% or more of my weight on the inside foot is comfortable that can be a normal position if it's what works for me?

It can get tricky depending on the direction of the turn you are attempting. if it's a right I tend to lead butt half off and finish the last downshift as I start the lean in. Lefts make me wait til the last minute due to dealing with the shift prior to setting my foot properly for the turn and then leaning in hard.
