I am having a vac leak problem... I didn't go with the original equipment cam chain tensioner and I have not re-installed the black box with hoses... Is it vital? If not where are the common leaks found?

Hello M, this is a strange question.
First of all, the Cam chain tensioner has nothing to do with the vacuum, which I assume you mean in the inlet manifold?
What do you mean by 'black box with hoses'? I assume you mean the airbox. If so, you really need this as it houses the air cleaner and is vital to smooth running. There may well be kits available to remove it.
The only areas where Vacuum leaks can happen are where the vacuum gauge screws go or due to loose or cracked inlet manifold stubs or as you might say, 'those funny black round things that the four silver thingies sit on'
I hope this helps.

Figured it out. When I did the AIS plugs I had the motor torn down when the new head went on. If it was full choke it ran great. No choke she stalled out. Spark tested great, Fuel flow was awesome and no vacuum leaks at all. A little carb cleaning and reset the pilot screws and she pulls like a freight train...
