I have a 2007 R1 but am on the fence and thinking about the current iteration.

For those of you that have owned a 2007-2008, how do you compare the previous model to the new models?

I bought a new 07 in May, put on about 9100kms (approx 5500 miles). Traded it in on a new 09 in October. I havn't put much mileage on the 09 due to winter. What I have noticed so far is that the 09 has better low/mid pull. Sound is different. Seating is more comfortable on the 09....my neck is not getting as stiff and as well the 09 is less "buzzy" . I haven't done much in the high end rpm sector on the 09 yet (breaking it in gently). The 07 is a really nice bike, I enjoyed it more than the 07 CBR1000RR I had but personally I like my 09 just a bit better.

I had a 08. I used for a trade in on the 09. I used the 09 for a trade in on a street and trail ktm. Then went and bought a brand new 08 again. The 09 does have more low end pul but it is also geared lower than the 08. The ability to shift between maps was cool but I found myself riding std mode most of the time. I am a large guy and felt more cramped on the 09.The 09 doesn't look near as good but does have it positive points. I would say unless your trying to compete with the newest equipment do not waste your money. They have brand new 10 models for 9999.00 here also.I just do not see the point for a 2011 model that is exactly the same when there are so many leftover 09 and 2010 models.I could have bought any one I wanted but I went back to the 08 model.

How comfortable a bike is depends on who is riding it, I can go 300 miles easy on my 07, while my friend can barely stand to ride it across town. The whole "the 09-10's have better low end" craze has more to do with gearing, as the US 09-10's come from factory with a 47T rear sprocket where as the 07-08's came with a 45T rear sprocket.

For keeping this within a certain tolerance these are both from akrapovic and I am assuming these where done on the same dyno. Now I have looked at several other stock dyno graphs for the 09-10 and 07-08 and the curves are all pretty damn close to each other. (if anyone has a base, as in stock form dyno graph for a 07-08, 09-10, let me know so I can add it)

Now I do agree with the whole resonance being applied to the back tire when leaned over and on the throttle, as one piston applying force to the crank at a time is going to have half the force of a flat plane crank that has two pistons applying force. But if we break the pulses applied to the tire into a measurable frequency and coincide that with the amount of friction the stock rear tire is capable of, assuming both tires have the same contact patch and added that the crossplane requires counterweights which adds weight to the crank which not only reduced the total piston acceleration, but helps to absorb these pulses which would create less of a pulsating power delivery from the tire to the ground. (taking the little rubber absorbers in the wheel out of the question)

Now though, I don't love or hate the 09-10's (I hate the ugly ass body though) but as suspension designs change and we can pretty much expect a large majority of what we currently know now about setups is going to change, I can honestly see the flat plane crank remaining dominant until they can get the weight out of the cranks.

This is all just my personal opinion here and I'm kinda drunk, so excuse me if I made a few mistakes.

i personally love the 09, handles, rides, like nothing i've ever ridden,

if i had an 07-08, i would not trade up to it though.. wait till 2012.!

people always think (better, would believe) that the better low end of the 09 is due to its 47 rear sprocket FORGETTING that it has a 190/55 rear tyre vs the 190/50 07 rear tyre.
they got exactly the same final ratio .... low/mid is way better on the 09 even if you put a 45 sproket like i did on a fast track... no comparison at all!
if you want to give a look at the final ratio give a look here:
http://www.gearingcommander.com/
this thing is able to wheelie just from 2000 rpm and some throttle thanks to its torque.do that on the 07 and it just bogs!
the r1 07 short stroke motor has nothing down low...the crossplane is even shorter stroke but thanks to the crank got outstanding torque and the ability to manage big quantity of fuel even in low end.

i say the 07-08 is better imean who wants to drive in low end its a r1 people get on the highway and rip it @13900 rpms i rode the 09 and if i wanted a ducati i would have brought it and the extra 70lb where did that come from also i find the new r1 to be to user friendly now any newbie can ride it f**k that bro keep your bike you will thank me later:fact

Not sure i'd be happy with the power of the US version of the 09 myself, but have the euro spec one and 161bhp is plenty for the road. Had the 07 before and it made 172 but was weaker everywhere other than at full throttle above 8000rpm. And as Triplex pointed out the 09 is geared the same as the 07 due to the tyre, its identical, so the lower gearing thing is nonsense, it just pulls harder everywhere due to the engine/electronics.
For me, on the road the 09 is miles better. But the last thread i said that in i got accused of being biased and not knowing what i was talking about by a long term member who sounded like he hadn't a breeze and was obviously over protective of his bike. :)
The 09 isnt perfect, the clutches are weak and the CCT is an issue. I had both replaced in 8000 miles, but as a road going sportsbike its my favourite ever. The current Blade and BMW are both better performing bikes, the BMW simply murders everything if all you wanna do is go fast or love your straight line squidness. But in terms of enjoyment, the R1 wins. The only engine i like as much is the 1098/1198 but the rest of the ducati doesnt work as well on the average road. It needs smooth flowing roads to work correctly.

on the 07 in STOCK trim you can wack the throttle while leaned if you are under 7000 rpm ... NOTHING happens... till 7000 rpm seems a 600cc bike well tuned...till 9000 a well tuned 750...after a very well tuned 1000:fact
the 09 behaves like this:
a well tuned 1200 twin till 7000 rpm ... a good tuned 1000 till limiter

i just prefer the second option ... and really 70lbs more? where? the 09 got 8kg more than the 07 ... simply put a mid-pipe and the weight difference is gone!
1kg more is due to the bigger size rear tyre
1kg more due to the targa support
almost 2 kg due to the counterbalance shaft
the rest due to the stiffer frame needed for the motor and the motor itself

however i never experienced a good feeling with the 07 due to its longer tank compared to the one on the 09...
i'm just 1.71m so kinda small and the 09 ergonomy helps a lot!

All I can say is that I've bought 3 brand new bikes in the past 10 years and planned to go from my 06 1krr to a new R1 until I got to the dealership and saw it. Sound was cool at first but it just didn't sit well with me after the fact. I can appreciate the good bottom end power, and it would realistically much better suit my needs BUT. It's ugly, the proportions are just wierd, and I know when I was out cruising with my buddies I would just be wishing my bike had that old screamin F1 engine sound that I've loved as long as I can remember. I bought a lightly used 07 just after the fact.

There is a few reasons why the 09 has more Low to Mid Range and Torque compared to the 07/08 R1's.

1. Gearing is 17/45 for the 07-08 and 17-47 for the 09/10 (More teeth on the back will grab much harder making it feel like it has more Torque)

2. The Power curve is a lot different. You can, as mentioned above, crank the throttle at 2,000rpm on the 09's and it will pick up whereas on the 07/08 it will just bog. (Get the 07/08 Jettuned so that it is restricted from "bogging" and crank the throttle then tell me how they both compare)

They are both totally different bikes and designed just to be that so hard to compare but for all out "Power" I think that the 07/08 would kick ass if compared to the 09/10 with the same mods including sprocket sizes and tires. ;)

It would be nice to see them both compared with the following mods:

1. Both Jettuned
2. Both have same size Sprockets
3. Both have the same size tires
4. Both with Stock and exact Aftermarket exhausts

Then we could really see what they look like side by side!
